AH-60L DAP Blackhawk

Myke, You keep fascinating me with the level of details and accuracy of your work again and again.
Excellent job here!

Thanks for the kind words everybody. I really appreciate it!

I should have a good sized update by Monday!

Hope everyone (here in America anyways) has a great holiday. Get the beer and brats out and get to grillin'. Ill be golfin, eating, drinking, and building. Maybe not in that order though, ha!

Have a great Memorial Day as well Myke!!!! Got our town parade to be in, starts right in front of my house!!! My daughters birthday to boot....friend and family and........SAUSAGE!!!! Doesn't get any better than that !!!

Have a great Day!!! ;D

Lots to do !!! man... I hope you didn't Bit more than you can Chew !!!

Looks gorgeous !!! No pressure man!!! it will turn out Awesome....

This is quite the project !!!! Where this Luv for Black Hawks started from ???

@ TRM: You're absolutely right, it doesn't get any better than that.

@ Norm: I should be good mate. I choose this project for the contest to challenge myself both in time management, and a few new techniques. I've never built a chopper before, and don't really have a particular interest in Blackhawks per se. I just saw this kit at a local hobby show back in Feb. for a realllllllllllllly cheap price (along with my next project too). This AH-60 is a perfect cross (i feel) between an armor and an aircraft build. It has so much detail inside and out and it can all be brought out to make a very realistic and interesting subject. Armor is my favorite subject to look at, the best models i've seeen are of armor; but, I love building aircraft, and there just isn't much on aircraft in the way of visible detail. All of the detail is in the cockpit (or worse in the wheel wells where you can't see it).

Thanks for watching!

Today is uber production day. Here is update #1

The armor plate that protects the pilots is not in the right position as the kit has it, so I cut it off and corrected it.

Drilled out the new holes, added brass rod and glued into place.

IMG_20110531_091337.jpg

While that dried, moved on to making my radio cords. It's simple and i'm sure you've seen it before. Thin wire wrapped around a small rod (or some evergreen stock in my case). I've made enough for all three. I just spray it semi-gloss black, and cut to size.

Next the engine intakes got assembled.

IMG_20110528_224243.jpg

And then the sanding/filling/sanding/filling/sanding begins. Bad seams on this. Drilled the holes and added the rivet detail(see left)

Landing Gear assembly is up next. The one on the left has a notch for the refueling boom.

IMG_20110529_005421.jpg

More scratch work on the rear prop shaft while other piecies dry.

IMG_20110531_084528.jpg

And finally, The main cabin components are finally getting glued down.

IMG_20110531_095843.jpg

I shall return later today for another update.

;D Awesome work on the Intakes.... you took care of that seam.... really well !

the Tail Rotor shaft looks awesome as well !!!

Keep up the good work !

oh wow mate, that is just awesome! I'm speechless, 8) That is one stellar quality model, and it hasn't even been finished construction, looks like you threw your heart into this one!!

Excellent progress. Love the intakes and tail rotor work! Top notch!!! ;D

you are knocking this one out of the park! cant wait to see it all come together

Thanks again folks - your kind words are very motivational!

Not much to show here for my second update of the day/night. I spent most of the day cleaning and organizing every other part that i will need be it spare/scrap photo etch, or one of the 82000 pieces off the sprue. I have everything in order now to just do nothing but assembly and painting work now.

The only other building I completed today was the armor plating in the cockpit doorways. Added the PE, the wire and the styrene ribbs along the side and tab at the top to kinda tie it all together.

IMG_20110531_165033.jpg

And the other side...

IMG_20110531_173950.jpg

And the little piece that fills the gap, no idea what this is for, but it's there, on every photo I've seen. Anybody got an idea?

IMG_20110531_174014.jpg

My crudly drawn, but obviously highly technical schematics of the rear prop shaft. Missing is the the other genius drawing of the hydraulic compartment detail that i finished.

IMG_20110523_132727.jpg

A big thanks to my dogs who hung out with me while i cleaned every stupid piece of plastic left. Orwell on the left, Tenzing on the right. the two of them apparently bored stupid.

IMG_20110531_145544.jpg

Thanks as always, more tomorroww!!!

After 8 hours of work, 2 hours of cleaning, 2 hours of laundry, and 3 hours of pickup soccer..., i'm knackerd!!! G'night all!!

That extra plating came out real nice! nice touches! Looks like you got a great couple of helpers there!!! Carefule when you get to that Hornet in the background...it looks to be bigger than either of them. ;)

Thanks Grendels: Anything to scratch build I try to sketch out first. Once it's on paper, and I have the materials, then i can just go at it. Really saves time.
Planning this whole build was really tough because there is so much PE for this kit, the exterior has double what the interior has. Eduard really did well on this kit. I also keep finding corrections and places to add detail.

TRM: ha, that hornet is def. bigger then they are. That might be my next project.

The "Wedge Shaped" piece is the "Rear" Armour Plate ""support"" !
Well the Wedge is actually PART of the design of the REAR Plate... but its there.... Don't redo anything..

The Two Rods (top and bottom are only for the Sliding portion of the Armour panels... (the forward section) a New update on that, there is a Release Handle on the Front panel for easier Egress .... I see you have that on yours... NICE TOUCH !

29 days left !!! chop chop !!!!

Call in sick or something ... LOL...

HAHA, thanks Norm for that research. That's good to know!!

I have taken a couple of days off in the middle of the month. I guess my golf game is just going to suffer through June.

UPDATE TIME:

Finished off all the detail on the roof of the cabin. Just need to add the cabling now.

IMG_20110601_115035.jpg

Painted up the straps for the supplemental fuel bladder. The instructions say they are an olive drab color but in every photo I've seen they are a khaki or tan color. I'm using Tamiya Khaki Drab over some thin masking tape. The tape is great because it has a bit of texture to it that can be drybrushed to futher help make it stand out a bit against the flat black fuel tank.

Just realized how bad the lighting is on those photos. My apologies. I'll get some better photos tomorrow.

Off to work now, more tomorrow. Happy Modeling!!

Now that I look at it again.... HOW hard would it be for you to Reverse those Wedges ??? to the Thinner part be at the Rear ? (cabin Frame) and the larger part hooked to the Armour plates ???

Just saying ??? not trying to be picky ! maybe its because I don't have your Drawings... you are feeding from !!! the second picture I linked does show a different angle !!! so that 's why I am asking...

Take care !

I will pop open mine and see what it is all about !!!

Norm

OUT !
