Bought this beauty a while back, saving it for a special occasion. I figure now is a great time to build it. This has been quite a complex build with hundreds of tiny, delicate little pieces. Happy to report that only a few were lost in the abyss between the wall and my desk!
Finemolds did an incredible job on this kit. It's gorgeously detailed, and well-engineered. Every piece fits together perfectly, and are semi-foolproof, with tabs built in so you get the correct placement. Mold lines are minimal, but also very hard to clean on the more delicate pieces, especially the 1-2mm diameter piping.
I'm just doing a basic out of the box build, no PE or lighting. I want the ship to look like its sitting in a spaceport somewhere, with the crew out at the space cantina.
At this stage I've got everything assembled and ready to paint. This weekend I hope to paint the cockpit and gun turret interiors, as they must be completed first before they can be glued together.
Here's some photos, hope you enjoy and CC is welcome!
Here I'm just getting started back in November.
Piles of sprue everywhere.
Getting some sub-assemblies done. I love the landing gear.
Nutrition is important.
Upper hull nearly done!
My paint selection.
Used the reference photos of the original filming model from Empire and Jedi that came in the kit to reproduce the battle damage.
I love how crisp the hull details look with some primer.
Test fitting the canopy. I plan on masking and painting it with the lower cockpit hull together, so I'll have to get a very tight seal on the joint so that no paint from my airbrush gets inside the cockpit.
More glorious detail. I opted to not put on the grille thing that covers the engine. I think it looks stupid and covers up the cool detail of all the thrusters.
Did a test paint on the interior mandibles and missile launcher bay, as I had to paint them first before final hull assembly. Would be too hard to get paint in there with it all together. At first I tried a medium gray with light gray mid tones and white highlights, but it looked too cold.
Looking at the filming model, it has a subtle off-white, almost brownish warmth to it. But that could just be the lighting they used to take the photos. So I tried starting with a very light sand color for the base, followed with off-white for the mid tone and pure white highlight. I like this result much better, but I'd love to hear any suggestions.
