Bought this beauty a while back, saving it for a special occasion. I figure now is a great time to build it. This has been quite a complex build with hundreds of tiny, delicate little pieces. Happy to report that only a few were lost in the abyss between the wall and my desk!

Finemolds did an incredible job on this kit. It's gorgeously detailed, and well-engineered. Every piece fits together perfectly, and are semi-foolproof, with tabs built in so you get the correct placement. Mold lines are minimal, but also very hard to clean on the more delicate pieces, especially the 1-2mm diameter piping.

I'm just doing a basic out of the box build, no PE or lighting. I want the ship to look like its sitting in a spaceport somewhere, with the crew out at the space cantina.

At this stage I've got everything assembled and ready to paint. This weekend I hope to paint the cockpit and gun turret interiors, as they must be completed first before they can be glued together.

Here's some photos, hope you enjoy and CC is welcome!

Here I'm just getting started back in November.

Piles of sprue everywhere.

Getting some sub-assemblies done. I love the landing gear.

Nutrition is important.

Upper hull nearly done!

My paint selection.

Used the reference photos of the original filming model from Empire and Jedi that came in the kit to reproduce the battle damage.

I love how crisp the hull details look with some primer.

Test fitting the canopy. I plan on masking and painting it with the lower cockpit hull together, so I'll have to get a very tight seal on the joint so that no paint from my airbrush gets inside the cockpit.

23560908101_1435f3b6e5_b.jpg

More glorious detail. I opted to not put on the grille thing that covers the engine. I think it looks stupid and covers up the cool detail of all the thrusters.

23534765992_1b8eb988e0_b.jpg

Did a test paint on the interior mandibles and missile launcher bay, as I had to paint them first before final hull assembly. Would be too hard to get paint in there with it all together. At first I tried a medium gray with light gray mid tones and white highlights, but it looked too cold.

Looking at the filming model, it has a subtle off-white, almost brownish warmth to it. But that could just be the lighting they used to take the photos. So I tried starting with a very light sand color for the base, followed with off-white for the mid tone and pure white highlight. I like this result much better, but I'd love to hear any suggestions.

Incredible work on this one so far

Looking good Cave Dweller.

If you are interested in the card graphics for the cockpit that I'm using. You can find them here.

Hey thanks guys. I got a little bit of bench time here and there and I saw the force awakens tonight, so I'm definitely pumped up! What a cool movie!

I built the cockpit in phases. Had to get it all painted and decals done before gluing the canopy on. A little tricky, and I kinda skimped on the details.

Here it is mostly done, along with the turrets.

23488768489_748c98613c_b.jpg

Decals applied and masked the canopy. I used white glue to get a good seal without messing up the plastic, didn't want to use superglue and risk frosting.

Cockpit glued in!

After seeing the new movie and a whole lot of pics of the Falcon landed, I noticed the landing gear bay doors appear to swing out to both sides, so although initially I wasn't going to use these pieces, I decided to cut them in half and put them on.

I think it looks pretty good, so I quickly primered them!

Aaaaaand I got my first coat of paint on everything! She's coming around nicely. Waiting on the paint to try before I start highlighting with white. Will have to make an emergency hobby shop trip tomorrow, as I'm running low on Vallejo white and it has that ultra-matte finish that I need. The badger paints tend to have a slight satin finish to them, and I just can't have that.

It's looking amazing! Any thought to a base? You could find 1/72 hangar stuff fairly easy. Maybe add a hose refueling her?

Nah, this is just an out of box build for my collection. I had thought about doing something special like that, since it was an expensive model. But it doesn't have to be epic, just completed to the best of my ability.

As a side note, my badger renegade is giving me so much grief! Damn thing clogs up constantly, and I've had to break it down and clean it repeatedly today. The little nozzle that fits around the needle seems to be where the paint clogs. Happens most with Vallejo, which dries very, very fast.

It's too bad these amazing kits cost so much- i'd love to see more builds as other ships.
I recall someone built the smaller scale Falcon in a crashed scene and there was more shock than admiration

I can't recall ever seeing an "Oota Goota" or "Solar Flare" built in 1/72.

Maybe we'll see a repop with options for a TFA dish?

Anyway, your build rocks- are you adding Han and Chewie or just doing the ship?
I wanna see your skill on figures!
Also, for some strange reason I want guacamole when I see your build- no idea why ;D

Allright! Making some good progress on this, coming down to the final weathering stages actually. She's coming together nicely.

I did a lot of shading and layering with my airbrush to create a varied and patchy color scheme, with lots of light brownish then overlaid with white-grey.

23913310956_49a01da7d1_b.jpg

Just a hint of darker color in the recesses.

23643744080_9de206f73e_b.jpg

And some blackening on select areas.

23939346945_dd780f4732_b.jpg

Then I started applying the decals. These decals were not easy to get to sit right, and I had to make many small incisions with a knife to get an opening for the setting solution to cover the whole decal. That worked out ok, and I chipped a lot of them to get better setting.

23939340075_1bf14f07b5_b.jpg

I realized I screwed up by gluing on these control vanes too early, and couldn't get the decals on. So I covered them with some Scale 75 acrylic. I kind of wished I had used this for everything, as it has a very nice matte finish.

23831091742_710b3464e9_b.jpg

With the decals all set, it's time for weathering! I started with a very thin wash of black oil paint applied to the entire model, and in some places a little bit thicker.

23312562933_b76406d3e6_b.jpg

The masking turned out great! A little imperfect in some areas, but I don't think it would be worth scraping the excess paint off, as it would risk scratching the plastic.

23312482993_1f21b724d0_b.jpg
Landing gear. I painted the hydraulics in various layers of silvery paints.

23939322795_36de3a4140_b.jpg

I then applied AK metallic pigment to them with a swab. The one on the left has the pigment and the right is plain paint. It really adds a nice metallic sheen to them.

23643659940_dda123773b_b.jpg

Next I glued on my landing gear bay doors, I'm really glad I took the time to do this little mod.

Toying with the idea of adding some hydraulic hoses, which I can see in some shots in the movies. These wires might be a little too thick, and would need to be painted grey.

maaan- this is looking great!
Has anyone ever made the drop-down antipersonell blaster? That'd be cool to see on a landed build.

That is a good idea for a mod.

So, I'm done with my Falcon! Did a bunch of oil filters all over it the last few days, and it'll take at least a week to fully dry. I don't want to handle it for photos during that time, so it's just sitting on a shelf.

I'll post some glamour shots with a backdrop when it's ready to touch.

Here's a few more pics of weathering. I went and did a little bit more rust and grime streaking on it.

Here's what I use for a lot of weathering these days:

Liking the progress here. This is looking very cool.

Something I've never noticed before... is that bottom gun on upside down or is it supposed to be (could be optional?) a different orientation than the one on top? I just struck me that I never recall seeing gun cradle facing out like that before.
