painting clear nacelle caps?

I'll be getting a Romulan Bird-of-Prey tomorrow and I'm wondering about the painting of clear nacelle caps.

I've heard of a trick where you put crinkled up aluminum foil inside and paint the dome clear red or give it a wash with black.

I used Tamiya clear red paint to do the ones on my enterprise NX model. Once that set up a bit I came back with flat flesh to give it a swirl pattern. You can see the end results here:

I experimented on a piece of clear plastic before I painted up the nacelles. I suggest that you do that. The good thing about Tamiya paints is that if you mess up, you can strip the paint with alcohol.
