I recall toothpaste tubes in the 70s were metal, maybe lead? While that might explain some things about Gen-X, I think the newer ones are plastic. That is what you mean, the plastic toothpaste tubes? I'm willing to try.
I used "toothpaste tube" foil with the decals applied for the harness in my 1/72 P-40K. Apply the decal, flat coat, then cut it out with a very sharp knife and small chisel blade. Any sufficiently thick metal foil will do. I don't think plastic tube will work. This is the best picture of the seat belts that I have.

I agree (without trying) for the same reason. I did find that you can buy expired dental film which has a lead backing (X-rays and all) that is perfect for 1/48 seatbelts IMO. Might be a little thin for 32 or thick for 72, but could work. I typically apply the decals to the lead and cut it then, but can be cut into strips and painted if the decals are complex or you prefer.

Anyway a lifetime supply is $10 because:
  1. It is expired by date, so not of much use as film.
  2. No dentists use "film" any more, it is all digital.

It is actual lead, so no licking your fingers!
