Pre shading with metalizer

Can I pre shade with metalizer when using Alclad II? You always see some sort of pre shading used on the stainless steel part near the exhaust nozzles but I can't locate any instruction on it. Here is what I am referring to.

If you are very careful with Alclad paints pre-shading will show through. I tried this a while back just to see if it could be done and it does work. Just pre shade like normal, and then be very, very careful of how fast you build up the paint.
