Thanks, Ian! That sandpaper trick worked very well. I thought you had used the method of laying down the base and then using oils and a still brush to go back over and lay down a grain pattern. Your method is easier!
 
My method was purely experimental too! I just sanded and them added a couple washes and it came out like that.
