Airbrush vs. spray paint

Definitely not. Much more control over the airpressure, paint, size of spray pattern, etc, etc.

An airbrush can do what a spray can does, but a spray can, can't do what an airbrush does.

That being said, you can still get a very good finish with spray paint. It is definitely not on the same level as an AB in terms of controllability and customizability, but it is a very good substitute. I have used spray cans in the past and achieved some pretty good results.

I sometimes use spray cans when I'm doing something that doesn't require the control of the AB and I'm feeling lazy to setup and clean the brush. But yeah, some thing you just can't do with a spray can.
