I've had to glue the rest of the super structure to the hull sooner than I wanted to. I kept knocking off or breaking small parts turning it around to work on.
I still have more stairs, figures, railings, etc., to go.
Then next I think I do all the 20MM Oerlikons, then 40MM Bofors.

Chris, I don't believe Ponto Models make a set for the 1/200 USS Hornet CV8, but they do make one for Trumpeter or I Love Kit 1/200 USS Enterprise CV-8, which could be used easily since they were both Yorktown class CVs. I think the only difference for the most part was Hornet had Mark 37 directors for the 5inch guns and SC radar. I believe there are plenty of aftermarket parts for those. Eduard also makes photo etched sets (I believe four different frets worth), which offer quite a bit of upgrades at a much affordable price over the Pontos set. Wood decking can also be found outside of the Pontos set, it's up to you how much you want to upgrade and what's in your budget for the project. HTH

HI Kevin ship lookin great now a qeustion on your hull did the bilge keel come moulded on the hull or did you have to glue them on as thats how my hull is ?
chrisb

They had to be glued on. Most of the hull came as one piece as well, with the exception of the bow. The front 8" came as two parts you need to glue together, then attach to the hull. Otherwise the box would have to be that much bigger.

HI Kevin hope you are enjoyin your build of this fab battleship now a couple of questions if i may an firstly what make is your kit ? trumpy ? or somethin else ? an i see you put the tape on the hull to simulate hull plates yea ? are you leavin this tape on ? an did your hull have a water line mark ? as ive done my portholes in my hull an now thinkin of where the red oxide paint line will be an the black water line as on my hull there is nothing so i'll have to guess just by lookin at the colour chart an im not really impressed with this kit as its not very well exsplained hope yours is

For the better part of two weeks all my bench time has been building the Pontos 20 MM Oerlikons. I've managed to use eight of the eleven parts per gun. It's the best I can do. They are not all identical, sometimes by choice, like different elevation of the gun barrels, but most times not. I'm happy with that, especially when compared to the two part gun supplied with the kit.
I think once painted and installed they will be just fine.
Talk about tedious monotony, these guns make Panther or Tiger road wheels and single link tracks seem like a walk in the park.

Why do I feel like I just got out of prison :)

i honestly dont know if i would have the gumption to do those guns... especially with 11 parts each! i have patience for a lot, but i think i would have sprung for the 3d print versions. much respect for what you did !

Chris,
yes the kit is Trumpeter. I removed the tape lines on the hull after spraying a couple layers of Tamiya surface primer to build up some depth. I drue the water line by drilling a hole in a wood block to insert a pencil at the correct elevation ( the block is in the pic of the 20mm guns above). Then just put it up against the hull and slide it along to get a straight line on the hull. I used Tamiya XF - 9 Hull Red. I first thought it was way to brown, but I did mix alittle X - 7 Red to it, and with some weathering I think it came out well.

OH THANKS Kevin yes its all comin back to me now thats how i did my water water line on my big 1/72 scale hms tiger cheers sir as its funny how you forget things over the yrs as im gettin old 73 this yr good luck on your ship an i hope you wont mind if i ask you more qeustions as i progress on my hornet build an yes ive got to build a lot of them tiny guns like you have done wow its a wonder we stay sane doin these models lol
cheers sir

Fantastic build- Coming along nicely, really enjoying the posts, comments and journey right along with you.
It's probably too late to mention this, but I watch a LOT of model building videos, one of my favorites is Midwest Model Shop, (he's built multiple large scale ship models and is currently building the 1/200 Enterprise. (incorrectly thought it was the Hornet) Anyway, to my point, he's mentioned the monotony of assembling 40+ Oerlikon and Bofors for these ships, so he either printed himself or commissioned set of these guns, which frankly, look fantastic and require little to no assembly.
FWIW- Midwest Model Shop
Bofors Guns

I have watched all the u tube videos from Midwest Model Shop on his 1/200 USS MISSOURI build. Great source of information and inspiration.
I learned alot, the pencil in a block of wood for a straight waterline is just one thing.

no probs WtSHARK THANKS for the link i'll have a look anyway an sorry Kevin for postin on your thread

I got 1 of the 19 required 40 MM Bofors completed. The kit came with 20 guns so I had one to experiment with to see how much of the Pontos PE I could do.
I managed all of it with the exception of the gun barrels. Pontos needs you to drill four .4mm holes onto post not much bigger than the drill bit ounce you remove the existing barrels. I would have lost the last bit of my sanity after building 50 of the 20 MMs guns trying to get all four barrels aligned with each other.

Time for a beer. :)

Thank you, sir.
I was a little taken aback about not using the Pontos 40mm barrels, but the kit parts are pretty good. The anticipated frustration level involved with getting four tiny barrels perfectly aligned with each other, nineteen times, was just too much, because misalignment would drive me up a wall.
I used the brass barrels for the 20mm, and I will use them for the 5 and 16 inch guns. So I'm happy with that.
