1/200 USS IOWA

I've had to glue the rest of the super structure to the hull sooner than I wanted to. I kept knocking off or breaking small parts turning it around to work on.
I still have more stairs, figures, railings, etc., to go.
Then next I think I do all the 20MM Oerlikons, then 40MM Bofors.17500248067395076715479998280517.jpg17500248357501919775107724523686.jpg17500248722703046843868389403050.jpg

Chris, I don't believe Ponto Models make a set for the 1/200 USS Hornet CV8, but they do make one for Trumpeter or I Love Kit 1/200 USS Enterprise CV-8, which could be used easily since they were both Yorktown class CVs. I think the only difference for the most part was Hornet had Mark 37 directors for the 5inch guns and SC radar. I believe there are plenty of aftermarket parts for those. Eduard also makes photo etched sets (I believe four different frets worth), which offer quite a bit of upgrades at a much affordable price over the Pontos set. Wood decking can also be found outside of the Pontos set, it's up to you how much you want to upgrade and what's in your budget for the project. HTH

HI Kevin ship lookin great now a qeustion on your hull did the bilge keel come moulded on the hull or did you have to glue them on as thats how my hull is ?
chrisb

They had to be glued on. Most of the hull came as one piece as well, with the exception of the bow. The front 8" came as two parts you need to glue together, then attach to the hull. Otherwise the box would have to be that much bigger.

For the better part of two weeks all my bench time has been building the Pontos 20 MM Oerlikons. I've managed to use eight of the eleven parts per gun. It's the best I can do. They are not all identical, sometimes by choice, like different elevation of the gun barrels, but most times not. I'm happy with that, especially when compared to the two part gun supplied with the kit.
I think once painted and installed they will be just fine.
Talk about tedious monotony, these guns make Panther or Tiger road wheels and single link tracks seem like a walk in the park.

Why do I feel like I just got out of prison :)17509543288307451988243146130497.jpg

i honestly dont know if i would have the gumption to do those guns... especially with 11 parts each! i have patience for a lot, but i think i would have sprung for the 3d print versions. much respect for what you did !

Chris,
yes the kit is Trumpeter. I removed the tape lines on the hull after spraying a couple layers of Tamiya surface primer to build up some depth. I drue the water line by drilling a hole in a wood block to insert a pencil at the correct elevation ( the block is in the pic of the 20mm guns above). Then just put it up against the hull and slide it along to get a straight line on the hull. I used Tamiya XF - 9 Hull Red. I first thought it was way to brown, but I did mix alittle X - 7 Red to it, and with some weathering I think it came out well.
