if you decide to GO Crazy on the SANDING... and Sand the Trailer SMOOTH !!!

you can replace the RAISED rivets with 3D raised rivet decals.... cut a strip ! and lay in place...

VOILA !

You get them from Trains specialist or Archer transfers... Archer is more expansive than the Train guys... and the Train guys gives you large sheets...

I have some of the Archer stuff and its... Wicked ! Never had Raised Decals before but they sure can HELP you if you are in a BIND !

OF course ! chroming decals.. might be a problem ?? as you might see the Carrier film ??? not sure about that !

Good luck my man !!! that is quite the project you are working on....

Should look pretty UNIQUE once you are done with it !!

later dude !

Norm, she is a pretty small kit, and those rivets are tiny. Alclad will show any imperfections in the surface so the carrier film will show.

In fact I had to strip the trailer. I had a finger print on the trailer before I put down the Alclad. Guess what, it showed through the paint. The bottle warns that you must have a clean surface, and now I know exactly what they mean. I am going to give it a coat of Chrome this weekend.

That trailer is a perfect candidate for Bare Metal Foil

Dang, I didn't think of that. Jim you are right! Plus I have never done anything like that, so it would have been fun to try. Too late now, I am set on the Alclad....

By that you mean...you've base coated the trailer with Gloss black? Cuz that's the only way you will get the Chrome effect!

Take care John!

I am doing that today. I washed it last night, so she should be dry and clean for the black coat. It will not be touched by human hands again until it has a clear coat on it.

Playing catch up here, looks great! I love that alclad chrome on the engine!

Funnily enough I've just put down my first Alcad chrome today. Actually took several attempts to get it right, but I wish I'd waited for your vid first. Ah well, I'll learn from doing it and then I'll learn from watching you. ;D 8)

There is a good chance that Thunderpaws has gone and investigated that part, so it will get a once over before paint hits it.

The cats really don't mess with anything in the spray booth. They can still smell the residual paint and stay away. It doesn't' smell like food.

I got the trailer done:

One of the exhaust pipes has a scratch and needs to be redone, no worries, I have a couple of months to finish this one up. Just a bit here and there and she will be done.

Norm, that is Alclad Chrome. The photos don't do it justice. I will get some outside shots today and post them.

That Alclad's looking great, when I tried it I found it hard to get perfect but you seem to have nailed it, great job

Ok guys... as usual !!! I am going the be the Devil's Advocate !

Alclad Chrome is meant to be "CHROME" guys ! if applied over a GLOSSY black Undercoat !

If applied over anything else... But Shinny Black paint !!! It will pick up the qualities of the paint underneath ! but won't come out as chrome ! more like polished aluminum or stainless steel and so on !!!

Although my Pictures have noting to do with JOHN's Build...... and isn't perfect by a long shot... I demonstrate what ALCLAD Chrome should look like ! and should be reflecting... what ever is around it !

I am sure JOHN you will find this Closer to what you were after !!! Not sure what happened ??? you went too fast or Too heavy... ??? Alclad is temperamental at times...

Ok guys... let's have at her !!! No...! I just wanted to be... sitting on the fence on that one !!! I hope John you will understand what I wanted to demonstrate...??? I sure hope so ? Not trying to put the Nail in the coffin ... just wanted to find out if you really used it as directed? I never dilute mine BTW !!! pure in the A.B. over a Shiny Black Base Coat !

The ball is in your court !

Norm.

Norm, here is an outline of what I did:

prepared the surface with 600, 1200 and 4000 grit sand paper.
The first time around I used a rustolem primer (Note the first time, these photos are round two.)
Then it was sprayed with Alclad black gloss base.
Then alclad aqua clear
Then the chrome
Then another aqua clear.

This was following the directions I got on the web.

Here is a daylight photo:

As you can see it is reflective, but the surface feels rough. It shouldn't after that 4000 grit paper.

Here is one of the pipes:

As you can see they have the same look to them and they got the same treatment with the 4000 grit paper.

So I think it is the clear coat between the gloss black and the chrome. It isn't going on even or something.

Speaking of photos:

I asked and she said yes!

;D ;D

Spectacular!

And congratulations to you and your fiance - a true match made in heaven! I wish the best for you two! ;)
