Mutara Class Starship-New Contest Build

As long as your nemesis with the decals doesn't show, you will get her done!! A nice update!

Hi Quaralane

That a fine looking ship your doing a good job it will be impressive with those patterns.

XXXNITRO

Thanks, guys.
Hope to spend most of tomorrow working on her while I'm off work.

@Texaslobo,
Actually, a lot less than you might think.

@fcschmidt,
They're definitely the way to go for me. If I'd had to do all of this with paint, I'd have never started it

Q this is looking great. I am so glad you went with the aztec as it really makes it pop. I like your choice of adding some more color to the scheme. Federation ships tend to be rather bland to begin with. I have a HL near me here in Florida and i recall seeing that same decal paper you were talking about. Was there any difference in theirs and the one you bought online?

Also after the contest concludes could you do an instructional video on how you print your own decals. I am sure alot of us would find that very helpful.

I'll second that request.

Q, this is awesome stuff! I'm going through some of your builds, and this is favourite so far. Yes, even more than the Death Bird!

Thanks for the comments, guys.
@Fumblethumbs,
One advantage of having a lot of soundtracks on the hard drive.

@noc5659,
I may make that video in the future.
As to the decal paper, no, no differences other than sheet size.

@igard,
glad you're liking the build archives

LOL!!

;D ;D

I notice the "Aztec-zilla," on your post before I watched the video. Lots of work going into those decals. And I use the same method for long decals, cut them up and apply the pieces. It is far easier than it sounds.

Good update!!

Hey Q,

Not trying to hijack your thread here but can you share a bit of knowledge about these Aztec schemes you Trekkies are using? I know nothing about it but I do find the idea of some sort of camo being used in deep space odd. Why not just turn off the running lights?

I'm not much of a Sci-Fi or Fiction fan in general, except for some of 1950's/60's stuff. It's interesting to see how close some of the ideas were to what actually ended up being used in programs like Apollo.

I don't think Aztec_ing.... if that is a word??? is intended to be construed as CAMO !!!

It's just to help define the panelling on smaller and more complicated star ship! Like some of the more advance dudes do it with "stock cards" and basic Airbrush technique.... very light coats of translucent paint !

Those decals makes our lives a lot easier.... by a long shot!!! Can you imagine Q. doing all this by hand ! Wow...

They now have them for the battle star Galactica... and some are available for the Star Wars Venator class SD. and makes those vessels pop as well ...

Just for info !!! take care all !

To expand on Norm's point, I believe the idea of the 'Aztec' finishes on space craft is to show all of the individual panels required to build such an epic sized vehicle, otherwise one might get the impression that these are on giant solid object.

It's probably done from an artistic point of view, adding visual interest to the finish of what might otherwise be simply a big boring slab of off white.

Patrick,

you my friend are a modeling machine. I am right on the cusp of failing to complete my second entry and you are on what, five? six? fourteen? ;D

You rock dude.

Nice work, Q! All those tiny windows coming with the aztecs add a lot to the final look of the ship. Keep it up, friend! ;)

Thanks for all the comments, guys.
I'm glad you're all enjoying this one.

And Ken? It's actually only four.

Thanks Norm and Ken. Purely Aesthetics. Makes sense.
The whole "aztec" thing actually started with Star Trek The Motion Picture.
In fact, the nickname of "aztec" plating came from the way the patterns on the saucer looked from certain angles.

And Ken and Norm covered the rest thoroughly.

I figured that...:p

And, as to the machine part, well, some times I just get on a roll
