Jaitea's Falcon Projects

eh up buddy lovin ya build mym8,especially ya mods, have you anymore images mym8. ;D

Thanks Quaralane & peza,

It's good to be moving forward again and not going back over & over, I still haven't finished the rings yet, but here's where I'm at:

So really all I have to do on the upper hull is the rod things on the actuators & the cockpit interior

Thanks very much guys for your encouraging comments, moving on (at last):

Attaching the hex walls getting them ready for the docking rings:

Gaps will be gone when finished (hopefully)

Now, the problem I have is the height of the hex tube as this studio pic shows:

Ozzy cut these parts off so that he could increase their height, I'd wreck the stability of my model with all that I've hacked off, so I'm gonna have to find a solution some other way

J

I had a PM from Ozzy and he spotted a part that instead of me reducing the size of, I built it up.....after checking the reference photos of the 5ft studio model....the part that Ozzy pointed out stood out like a huge boil, so it's modification time again.

I snipped off the parts:

Then removed the skids on the bottom & cleaned up

I have had a couple of other problems since my last post the portside mandible looks a tad twisted if viewed straight on, I think when both hulls are glued this should disappear.....and the starboard docking ring needed broken off again......it was causing a bit of distortion due to the way I had attached it.

J

Thanks MJ,

After posting those images......I'm starting to think the cockpit & dish are too large......?

I dunno?

I think your bieng to hard on yourself, if you had a 1975 panavision camera and shot your model on green screen it would probably look the same!

Yeah, I agree, you're pretty hard on yourself.
But, I know those kind of comments never stopped you from redoing huge portions of that ship ;D ;D
So, with that in mind, if you really really want to be picky, I mean really picky like fuck?&* tics picky, well the dish might be slightly bigger then the 5' reference model.
I personally think this is the MOST accurate Falcon I've ever seen so I know you decision will be the right one.

After all the work you've put into this, I wouldn't let the illusion of a couple of millimeters off throw you.
Your model looks excellent in those direct comparisons

Thanks Quaralane,

I got dimensions from Ozzy of what the cockpit, dish & docking rings etc should be when scaled from the 5foot SW original:

Cockpit diameter = 43.79mm
Radar Dish = 43.97mm
Docking rings outer rim = 43.97mm
Docking ring Inner rim = 38.69
Side wall height 15mm

Depth for spacer to get the curvature = 66mm

I had made the cockpit & dish 48mm, the docking rings (the current ones) somehow are the dimensions they should be.....so.....I'll continue on....detailing the underside.....but on the side I'll see if I can scratch a new dish & cockpit fresh.....not touching the ones I have made, I don't want to scrap them, incase the new ones don't turn out right.

As you said i have gone to this length to do all these modifications.....I couldn't leave it as it is, it would ruin the love I have for the project.

Jurasikfrank, you are right I have redone portions of the ship in the past, & I'm going to have to do it.

merseajohn, thanks very much for your continued support, it is so strange that I couldn't see the fault (and still can't) when i look at the model with my eyes, but through the camera the incorrect parts look huge......strange.

I think I'm going to totally scratch the Radar Dish, structure & base, I think the whole unit is too large....even the opening in the hull:

Last night I made a new tube for the cockpit, I don't know if it is because I've experienced it before and because of the problems I had with the docking rings, I was able to make the tube and was happy with it on the first attempt.

Thanks for the help guys

A quick update on the cockpit tube, basically transferring details from the previous tube to this one....I used a piece of piping for the walkway which was 40mm diameter, so I wrapped very thin plasticard around it to bring the diameter to 44mm (a useful tip is to get spray adhesive and apply it to the plasticard, so when wrapping around the tube it doesn't want to spring off)

For the recessed areas I cut down to the original tube through the layers of card:

If you remember post 166 http://www.scalemodeladdict.com/index.php/topic,4312.msg94283.html#msg94283
when I was modifying the Jaw-box on the 1/72 FineMolds falcon

I just did the modification without explaining HOW I did it, heres a breakdown:

Firstly I didn't use a saw to remove the jaws, I used a sharp scalpel blade and sliced off a layer at a time of the area that I needed separated:
p1030808d.jpg

I don't know if there is a modellers name for this technique but basically its planing
planinge.jpg

Planing on this kit is slow due to the plastic being a good bit more stiff & brittle than the MPC kit.....a sharp scalpel cuts through MPC plastc quite easily.

As the jaw-box needed to be shortened, I had to find somewhere that I could try and hide where I cut pieces away in the details, another thing I would recommend is to try and mark where you are cutting and keep your marking & cutting as square and precise as possible, take your time, I tried to be as careful as possible, but I still had to dismantle the top jaw several times just to get it square, I'd learnt my mistake and the bottom jaw's mod went without a hitch.

Hope this helps anyone who is thinking on attempting this procedure.....if anyone needs to contact me, send me a PM
