1/72 Lancaster Mk 10 SAR

Here are the pre build pictures taken Saturday, April 2nd 2011. Not the paused youtube video on the monitor, its Scott's contest video posted to Youtube April 1st.





The kit is the 1/72 Lancaster kit by Revell Germany. Ill be building it as an RCAF post war Lancaster Mk10 SAR (Search and Rescue) using Belcher Bits decals and resin wheels.

Now on to the build. First thing I had to do was to open up a few new window positions at the rear of the fuselage. I marked the outer edge of the windows with masking tape, then drilled into the corners. I then used a hobby knife to cut the holes open, finally using files and sanding sticks to shape the window openings. I used some unused canopy parts to make the new window panes.







Next, I filled in the windows along the upper sides of the fuselage since Canadian built lancasters didnt have them. Im keeping the interior detailing to a minimum since I dont thing much will be seen through the greenhouse canopy anyways. Just some simple drybrushing to bring out the raised detail in the fwd crew cabin and wheel wells.









Next I started closing up the fuselage and then attached the wings. The fit so far has been pretty good, not Tamiya like, but better than I am used to from Revell. The wings fit so tightly onto the spars that glue was not needed to hold them on. Just a bit of Tamiya super thin was needed to join the wing to the wing root. Now I let it sit for a day before I putty the seams.

Glad to see the Revell Kit has been vastly improved and a huge improvement over the old Airfix kit.
I had a Lancaster B1 kit from Revell about 15 years ago, raised rivets, very, very basic cockpit - a bit of work involved - lost it due to kids playing with when i wasn't home :'( .

I was thinking of doing one of these with a Lincoln conversion, but I think knowing me that I wouldn't finish it in time!

As fpr the Lanc, Im really pleased with how well its going toether, I normally get bogged down with details before I get to this stage, but there were no real issues. Looking forward to the rest of this build.

And I finished up my Tamiya F-16 friday evening as well, twas a busy weekend. I figured since I wasnt gonna make it to Halifax for the contest, I might as well make the most of my weekend off.

Wow, it is pretty big, didnt really notice til now. The box says the wingsan is about 43 cm, thats about 17 inches I think. I should do a few size comparison pictures with my in progress B-17 and my completed 1/72 CF-104.

I've also entered this one in the Canadian Wings GB over at arcair.com. A few members there have volunteered some great info and reference pictures for me, Belcher Bits missed a lot of details on their painting guide, so I feel much more confident now with the added info. I will also be entering this in a special challenge category at this years CAMS show in Frederiction at the end of May.

Last night I fitted the bomb bay doors and assembled the engine nacelles. The nacelles were much easier to put together that I thought they would be. I couldn't resist a test fit of the nacelles, they fit on so well that they stay in place without any adhesive.

This is neat. I'd like to build one someday. The Lancaster is one of my all time favorite aircraft.

This bird is coming along really good.
What are Your plans for coloring? Shiny metal like on the noname's photos, or some complex scheme?

It will be a fairly complex scheme, a mix of bare metal on the sides and wings, grey anti corrosion paint under the fuselage, white paint above the fuselage, aluminum coroguard around the engine nacelles and red wing tips and horizontal stabilizers, markings will be high viz pre-unificatoin markings including the lightning fuselage stripes.
