I picked this model up yesterday at the local hobby store, I'll be starting on it over the next few weeks. I think this will make a great conversation piece on my desk.

Cool! Are going to use the photo etch for it, too? I love the little gold record and alien, too!

I thought about it, I've never tried them before. Where is the best place to buy them in the US? The only sites I've seen to buy them are European-based...

Well Eduard makes a good set

I could have sworn they were available @ Starship Modeler...but I'm mistaken...

LVM also has a boom set @ CultTVman

But I really prefer Eduard products...LuckyModel has them but they're not US

Squardon carries the Eduard set, too, but it's out of stock at the moment

Same for Sprue Brothers

Thanks for the links. I don't see anyone that has them in stock at the moment, but I will keep an eye out

My LHS has this kit as well and I have been very curious about it. I will be watching this!

This looks like it's gonna be a great kit to build... I especially like the little green alien that comes with it! That's awesome!

Just a quick update. I haven't forgotten about this. Was out of town for a large portion of the last month, so its somewhat delayed, more pictures and details as time permits.

Just a quick update on my progress to date. I have the dish assembled and the base is being assembled now.

The dish assembled and painted. I might add some more paint and polish at the end. The ring on the top piece was a happy accident. I added chrome paint and didn't like it, so I sanded it off, and the ring remained at the join of the two pieces. I sort of like it, so I'm not sure if I can going to remove it.

Backside of the dish. Not much detail to see here.

The main body of the craft beginning assembly and primed. Needs a little putty on the seams between the supports, but went together very well.

You can see where the golden record will go in the final assembly.

OK, here she is, basically in her final stages. There are still a few minor modifications I'd like to make. I'm not thrilled with the provided base, so I think I'm going to make a new one, probably just out of plain wood or plastic, nothing fancy.

Overall, I enjoyed this build, and I'd recommend it to others. Everything went together really well, without a lot of hassle. Half the pieces are so secure on the pins that you barely need glue to seal them together. You have to be careful not to break any of the thin tubing pieces (I broke two) but they are fixable if you are careful.

Wide View, gives you an idea of just how large the boom is relative to the craft itself.

Comments, criticisms always appreciated. This is my second scale model project since picking the hobby back up, so I'm always looking for tips to improve.

Nice model, the base does not work for me either. I think it would look good on a wood base maybe gloss black, just my opinion.. Nice build!!

Thanks for the reccomendation, I may check that out. My plan was just getting a plain wood disk from the craft store and spraypainting it black. I thought it might be cool to have a "golden record" base, but that seems a little too ambitious.
