[REVISITED] Spitfire Down!

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

Ohio...I guess I mean the Battle of wherever freaking corn grows!

Thanks all. Really appreciate all the help on this.

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

OK.

So I just took a walk. I have farmland behind my house. Last year they planted wheat. This year carrots. There is still some wheat growing in the corner of the field. Might be interesting - at least for part of the field.

So - hedgerows. - "Hedgerows, especially those that are ancient or rich in woody species, provide valuable habitats for wildlife and are a key component of our cultural and landscape heritage in Britain."

What about wheat in one field and a plowed field in the next, hedgerow in between. Old hand operated plow in the corner of the field. Spitfire crashed and slid thru the hedgerow, destroying some of it. Tilly drove up either on access road (if that would be) or drove right thru the field?

Does that say England 1940?

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

On this page read Monday, 12th/Tuesday, 13th August 1940 N345.corn fields in britain 1940. ;)

And if your still uncertain you could go with a poppy field.

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

Cool. I bet it's the 'grain' type of cornfield though.

Where's that sci-fi kit?

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

The Battle of Ohio, sound like a Ma K build is in the works, or maybe a "Red Dawn" thing.

All of the crash images I have seen have shown wheat or grass meadows. In my searching except the corn field of the Israeli Spitfire. Sorry Scott, my gooogle fu is weak.

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

No worries. Thinking more about this...if I were going down in a Spitfire and had the slightest ability to maneuver the plane would I choose A: Cornfield or B: Meadow.

I'm thinking meadow.

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

I dont think you'd have much of a choice if you where crash landing.

A dio like this should be easy to replicate. :D

SWEET CORN!
A lot of reading but sweet corn growing is mentioned.

After digging around that site it does seem possible that there was a field or two. Certainly not the norm, but possible.

If we did that, everyone would enter but all the submissions would be of rocks sitting on dirt. What the heck happens in Ohio? You're talking about the US state Ohio, right? LOL

My wife would be very upset with you, she's from Chagrin Falls Ohio and shes always yammerin' away about it...

but yeah, rocks sitting on dirt under a buckeye tree. ;)

Awe, tell ya what, she can make fun of Cali all she wants. :) And yeh. Sorry. :( Forgot about the tree. lol

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

So is it gonna be a corn field then? :D

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

Cool! This will be a good dio to see. Quite sentimental about the old Spitfire, me.

If you're doing hedgerows then how about two with a sunken lane between? The Tilly could be parked just short of the holes in the hedgerows. Also, in the S.E. of England the hedgerows are made up of planted trees and bushes etc:
http://www.britainexpress.com/History/english-hedges.htm
- so you don't need to worry about stone cores or anything, like these that we have here in Cornwall. Hitting one of these is not a good idea:
http://www.britainexpress.com/History/drystone.htm
They look nice and soft and green and easy to run into if you have an accident, but that's because they've got obteen hundred years of greenery disguising them! Quite a few fatal accidents here involve dry stone walls - hitting one with a Spitfire would be 'interesting'!

I've grown up hearing all about the bombing raids my parents and older relatives went through, especially during the Blitz, and how they would watch the dog fights overhead. Got a photo somewhere of my mother as a kid, sitting in her grandparent's garden with a whirling mass of fighters, contrails and smoke etc right above and behind her. They still come out with things I've never heard mentioned before, even now. :) Heh, ironic to think that my first fiancé's grandfather was a Heinkel 111 pilot and actually one of the guys dropping bombs on my father! Crazy world, hey?

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

Hedgerows would definitely look the part more than corn.

Do you have any more reference material? Examples of a road in between. Close ups? I've been Googling but all I get are small photos.

Re: [WAIP] Spitfire Down! Spitfire Down!

I'll go a-hunting mate, see what I can dig up for you.

Here are some pics to give you some ideas hopefully:

This next one is way better but quite a big bank on either side:

How about this one:

This is a good one:

How's that lot for now, Scott? Let me know if there's anything else in particular you're looking for.
