So I've been trying the Tamiya panel wash (black) and, mostly, I've used it to highlight detail in small areas to add a depth perspective.
I don't like it. It's not as forgiving as oil paints thinned with mineral spirits. The Tamiya wash doesn't clean up as nicely as oil paints.
I can pick out the high areas with dry brushing later, but I'm really leery of using this stuff as an overall panel wash on a plane.
Any tips or suggestions on what I'm doing wrong?

I use the same panel liner. I use a brush dampened with mineral spirits and it cleans up just fine for me.
My setup is a small container for mineral spirits and a clean paper towel, and I wipe the brush clean frequently.

I don't know, I don't own a bottle of it :) How does it smell? That will probably give you a clue. Or just try it with a drop of this stuff on a non-absorbent surface, and add in a drop of whatever you think might work. If it does, great. If it doesn't, wipe it all off, put on another drop and try something else :)

The mineral spirits do the trick.

I only use Tamiya panel wash when I'm not concerned about it coming off again. Otherwise I use Ammo Mig enamel washes. Applied over a coat of Alclad gloss lacquer, they'll wipe right off with a paper towel.
