As posted in 'new in stash' I picked up the 1/48 Revel kit. It's a bit of a turd, raised panel lines, crappy cockpit.
My plans are to keep it simple, but likely scribe the raised panel lines and scratch some detail in the cockpit.

I have a few items to finish up but I thought I'd start a topic and ask for some ideas on this build.

Namely:
Color schemes and markings (I'd spring for a decal sheet)
I want to have it landed and have been wondering what 1/48 land vehicle would make sense beside this....a Humvee? Not sure.

I've googled lots of walk arounds and pics but simply looking for a 'cool' idea.

Thanks.

Anyone make a decal sheet for this one?

Photo is not mine. Courtesy of PrimePortal

Or maybe do a what if digital scheme.

Go with a Bombina Frog camo paint scheme. Might look cool. Green & Black upstairs and Red & Black on the belly.

You could choose to model an OPFOR Mi-24 flown by the US Air Force for adversary training, then have a Humvee parked next to it. The OPFOR aircraft seem to have little or no markings from the photos ive seen:

i dont know of any modern vehicles in 1/48th scale other than Tamiya's Humvees. but if you can find any, a Soviet/Russian vehicle will be more likely suited to a diorama with this helo.

Cool to see you over here in the wingy things section Scott.

Cool subject to build. Personally, I like the box scheme for colours. I don't know very much about MiL-24 helicopters, but I think it would be cool to do an Afghan occupation dio, (USSR circa the early 1980’s), then you’ve a good selection of vehicles to choose from, and you can really break out your weathering chops. Ken, Norm or some of the armor guys would know exactly what to put beside it…

Thakns for the posts guys...

Yeah, the filthier the better. I've seen ALL KINDS of camo patterns and some of them are really beat up.

Cool links andrei383 - I'll check that out.l

SWEET!

Ok, that's the ticket. Nice little generic tractor to beat up, a couple of generic figures and some left overs for other projects. I can scratch that tow bar...and beat up the HIND. Perfect man. Thanks.

So now, markings and schemes. Any pics? Links to decals?

Coolness.

Also: would the rotors be tied down...and other details - covers on intakes etc... I don't know much about this stuff other than I think it's cool lookin.

im glad i could help, Scott. ;D

as for decals, im not sure what comes in the Revell kit, but as for aftermarket, ive found these from a company called Linden Hill:

these first two sets contain several variations (and of different countries) each:

http://www.lindenhillimports.com/lhd48012.htm

and this set is just for finer details:
http://www.lindenhillimports.com/lhd48013.htm

you will need to look for them via LHS or online shop as i could see no way to order them direct

as for your last question, from the pics ive seen, it seems that only Mi-24s in long term storage or museum pieces have their rotors tied down and have covers, etc. attached. (maybe in a combat environment, they need to be ready at a moments notice ???)

OK - been looking at all that aftermarket stuff....

I'm thinking either the Cobra Resin Cockpit and CMK Exterior set (+-$50)

OR

Eduard PE for both interior and exterior. (+-$40)

OR

Cobras Hind Twin cannon set - cockpit, more guns and sagged wheels for $26 (best option I think)

Suggestions? I have little to no experience with PE but have worked with resin a bit. Good chance to dive in....

That would be pretty cool ...lots of weathering potential too :)

Well Scott, you have much more experience than me, but I´ve found that too much PE for a "first time" can cause and adverse effect also (in the modeller, I mean)... by the way you can always buy the PE sets but not necessarily use all the pieces... just the more visible / evident ones... ;)

Oh, and the dio-idea of a crashed Hind is superb... just now it comes to my mind the idea of a crashed Hind not in an arid environment like Afghanistan but crashed in a forested region like Chechnya... downed by chechen Borz irregular fighters...

Cheers :)

:D That´s for sure, Scott…

Well, the most “graphic” images that I´ve found are those:

helicopter-crash.jpg

I think that the idea is very well expressed in these pics… :)

You have also the option of choosing between two kind of “forested” environments:

1.- You could use a tipical “Caucasus mixed forest” forest, with trees that we are used to see, for example:

caucasus_forest.jpg

2.- And you could also use a tropical forest… as far as I know some Hinds were used from “spin-off” / dead ringer companies or so (from the well known Executive Outcomes) in Sierra Leona…

Some "light" jungle (Sierra Leona, Liberia, Bissau…), to have a real idea of the environment...

I´ve seen a lot of pics, and It seems to me that when a chopper crashes “really bad” usually it gets literally to small-pieces, and if it burns it turns almost into ashes (I suppose that due to the light alloys employed in many parts of it)… but for a dio your idea of a chopper broken into two or three large portions (like the image that you posted) should work great !!! And the Hind has enough body to catch any eye attention…

I wish the ideas could be useful to you, Scott :)
Cheers, and go on!!! :D

A crash scene would be great for this kit. As it has two major issues, of which only one can fixed easily.

1. The tail, some say to short, others say the fin angle too shallow. I am not sure which is correct but Chris of Cobra Company says "cut the tail boom along a panel line behind the synch elevators and insert a 3/8" plug"

2. It is missing the Hind twist. The airframe is twisted 2°30' to the right.
Mi-24-Offset.jpg

If/when you want to do an accurate hind, I would go with the Trumpeter kit in 1/35 or the Zvezda kit in 1/72 for a more accurate Hind OOB and less need for aftermarket parts. Zvezda has the whole family of kit for the hind in 1/72.

For more Hind information, 4+ Publications has their out of print Hind book available for free on line.

as a point of reference, I would suggest looking into some screens from the Atacama desert and Battlefield : Bad Company 2. They had a hind that was useable in-game, and the scenery was rather lush and available for a diorama, also for some crash ideas I'm sure that folks have posted videos and stills from the gameplay. I just procured my 1/35 Hind and a BigED kit to tack onto it.

Good Luck on this build :)
