Hi, glad to be a new part of the Nerd Herd...

I started this kit 3 weeks ago. Allpaints are Gunze aqueous, except the radio details...those are Vallejo. I twisted some model car wires together to dress up the radio, and added a glittery ball to the front. I'm watching way too much Craig Ferguson, apparently. Nice kit, so far.

The wash I used is something new...in Brett Green's P-51D book, Roy Sutherland does a chapter on detailing the cockpit and wheel wells. He describes a wash he uses for interiors, consisting of a 50/50 mix of H2O/Future, and some acrylic paint. I mixed this up using some $1.00 craft store acrylic Payne's Gray, and it's the best wash I've ever used. Too bad it stains a little, so you can't really use it for panel lines and other exterior stuff. The seat harness is Eduard PE.

I still have to install the 4-person hot tub...it'll go behind the bowling alley. :) At this point, the airframe is complete, and I've applied a coat of Tamiya AS-12 Silver from a rattlecan. I'll post a few more pics of that in the near future.

The airframe is complete. I coated it with Tamiya AS-12 from the rattle can, and touched up a few scars that it revealed. I think I'll use the salt technique this time around...

The cowling guns on this variant are faired in, and Hasegawa provides parts for this. They needed a little mild sanding/reshaping to fill in correctly.

Except for the exhaust rings, the engine is assembled. Since you won't be able to see anything, I'm just going to spray the whole thing black. The exhausts will get more attention, since they'll be much more prevalent. Hasegawa molded the ends of the exhausts with a nice depression, which will take a wash very well. I think it's a nice touch.

That's it for now... :D

Beautiful work on that cockpit !!! Its coming on nice :)

Chris.

I really hated the way the salt technique was turning out so far this time (yellow ID panels and cowling), so I sanded/polished it all back and re-sprayed. I'll add some light chipping, etc., when it's all said and done. I'm letting the white paint dry overnight, and I'll mask it tomorrow then start the Grey and Dark Green. All paints are Gunze aqueous.

After preshading yesterday, I got the IJA Grey and IJA Green on. Then, I lightened some Green with the Gray, diluted it with thinner, and randomly sprayed it all over the upper surfaces to imply fading. You can't really tell in this photos, though...

Only a little touch-up was needed when all of the tape came off, and it's all now safely under a couple of coats of Future. I'm pretty happy with it all, so far. I may start decaling tonight.

Mighty fine work! If I may backtrack a little, how did you get such a well defined IP?

Hey, thanks! Well, most of the IP is kit decals. I added a Payne's Grey wash around it, then dabbed some aotake around with a sponge to simulate chipping.
