Eastern front RSO/03 & PaK38

thanks Leighbo, ive not tried yet but when i done the lower part of the jacket i used milliput fine and green stuff. to fill any small cracks or imperfections i brush over it with tmaiya basic putty mixed with humbrol liquid poly and that seems to work on the little things :)

I'll bear that in mind Spud, you'll find that mixed with milliput it does sand well enough.

I'll be following your build, if I work out any tips I'll let you know!

Thanks for the positive comments Ken & Geegad
I had to share my latest step with you all.
After quite a few days of serious sculpting and building accurately I got to be a child again on the base!!!
I started by cutting blue foam roughly and sticking it on a picture frame, I then edged it in some thick black art card and cut rough grooves where the track marks were, quite deep as I wanted this to reflect the real conditions in the RSO's main stomping grounds.

Then came the fun part! I mixed up, wall filler, white glue, black and brown acrylic paint, sand, roots, water, real dirt, bits of cut up grass and small stones and this is the gloop I ended up with

I then spread it over the base with an old paintbrush, making sure I didn't leave too much volume in the track areas

It may sound childish, but it as great fun, like playing in the mud as a kid!
The three cocktails sticks are where 3 posts will be to create part of a fence. I usually add a scratch built building, but resisted the temptation and will try and create interest with the mix of ingredients in the ground so I can showcase the vehicle and figures.
I will also add some AK wet effects when dry to simulate wet mud, if anyone has any tips on this I would appreciate hearing them as I have not used this stuff before or treid to creat wet mud either
Also I finally recieved the PAK 38 ammo crates today so I can plan the stowage and add more figures
Thanks for looking, I think I will go outside now and play with my sand pit!

Looks ....Muddy ;D the base will look great once its done

Hi guys

Not had much time for modelling this week, but heres the progress anyway.
Been trying to get the stowage on the RSO looking right
20120808_193152.jpg

As I wanted to be able to pose the figures on it I decided I wanted to be able to get the stowage fixed, so I created a false floor from plastic card.

And the fixed the stowage to it.

Once I had this fixed I started work on the figures

i know its a small part but i love the weathered look on that bar..and of course it goes with out saying everything else look quality

that guy sitting over the edge would have some very sore legs sitting there, What are those things on the side anyhow?? the second guys legs look really good btw.

Cheers Geegad & Spud

Spud they are winterketten tracks, thought it added more interest with his legs hanging over the edge!

Might even be able to squeeze another figure in on the back yet, we'll see

Looking good !

really liking the posed of the crew, nice clean sculpting work

great stuff,

shane.

WOW, outstanding job!!! Like the modifications you did with the figures. Great job on the details in the bed of the RSO and the terrain looks interesting.

Hi Guys

Been a crazy week with everything but modelling, but on holiday this week so i can catch up!

Had a happy accident with the base, I was trying things out and mixed up some wall filler, paint and Klear to try and get a wet look. Once it dried it went light in the patches I wanted dark, but I actually like the look, it gives it plenty of depth.

Also I finally finished all the limbs on the figures and have bluetacked the heads on for now. I have enjoyed the process and will definitely do more in the future, although it is quite time consuming waiting for each layer to dry.

On with the painting next, gotta get this finished in time for the group builds!

Thanks for looking

WOW, that is looking fantastic!!! I like what you have planned out here!! Keep up the mojo!! ;)

ya gotta love happy accidents ;D ... nice work.

Have you thought of trying Clear Gloss to help with the wet look ???
maybe a GelMedium ?

Leighbo, this is looking great. I almost ordered one of these as I think they are cool looking rigs. I guess I saved myself a headache. :) Anyway, I think you did a great job sculpting those limbs. Specially that first guy on the gun. Looks just right! I also think that mud looks perfect. It appears as mud that had started to dry a bit in areas. It has the effect of water settling in areas as well. Nice variation in tone. Throwing those bits in with the mud has made a great realistic texture in my opinion. ...Oh and by the way, your stowage looks sharp to. The barrels really stand out along with the other bits such as the rusty beam.

Thanks Matt, the RSO has been a bit of a labour of love, but to be honest It turns into a really nice model when complete, so don't let me put you off buying too much!

By the way I used the Badger you sent for the first time today spraying up the RSO and it works beautifully. I only had a cheap airbrush previously, which to be honest has served its purpose well, but this is a whole different ball game! The action is so tight and precise and I look forward to getting into some more detailed airbrush work on future projects, thanks once again and I'll have more pics on this soon!
