1/350 BB 35 USS Texas by Trumpeter

Just started another model after an involuntary hiatus. BB35 Texas battleship by Trumpeter.
That is one pile of plastic to work with and 4 small sheets of PE (nothing compared to what Pantherman and a coupla others are dealing with on their models).

In the photos you can see some of the new sanding sticks I got to replace the pieces of crap I was using.

Last night I got the hull assembled then I went to bed (I was tired). All I have is a small seam to blend out or at least try to make it less noticable.

Just a little update. I spent the day folding PE and I installed the deck.

More stairs than I care to think about (I know there are going to be more) and 20 of those open topped baskets.
I haven't done the AA guns yet-47 of them is the reason.

A little more progress.

Finished all 10 of these guns. I will need to fix some of the PE. Some of them went crooked

Part of the forward superstructure

The deck is installed with some of the secondary guns placed in the casemates (?).

I am about to start on piece J2, all of the parts are cut free. The H23 pieces are ready for the small PE part to be glued. Everything else has been built and is being stored in a small up with a lid so I don't loose anything.

Thanks, 3 however do need a little touch up to straighten the PE.

And after 2 hours of watching me assemble the AA guns, my family is convinced I need therapy .

So far so good. I'm still not a fan of working with PE

A question for those who have built large ships before.
Any suggestions or advise on assembling and painting the ship?
This is my first large scale naval ship.

All I know is build in segments.

I learned on the USS IOWA that you paint as you build. Get as much put together of each sub assembly as you can, paint , then add all the details that would probably break off or be in the way if you were to paint around them.
I painted almost all the guns and other details prior to installing them as well.

YES Kevin is right as thats the way i build my ships esp the big R/C ones but i always paint the hulls firstly if you look at my hornet build thats what ive done an all the guns an such still to come to fitting

Sweet! Have you decided what paint scheme to use? IIRC she had at least three different ones during WWII alone.

I am using measure 22 from 1943. With all the ships I have built (not many) I have never done a measure 22

I paint the hull first, then deck and sub-assemblies.

Being from Texas I am looking forward to watching this being built. I believe the real BB Texas has been in dry dock since being pulled out of the mud. It is looking spectacular.

After my short vacation I completed more of the model

I hope I didn't make a mistake by assembling the superstructure before painting, if I did well I'll deal with it.
Just waiting for the glue to cure before going on.

Had a couple of small pits that had to be puttied and sanded. The pits were from me and my goof.

I built this wrong. I had to use a debonder on it and refold the catapult properly. I debated with myself on whether too leave it off or refold. I chose the way of pain, I refolded it.

This PE was folded properly.

I am about to start putting some of the deck items in place, getting close to starting the paint. I am getting some more PE tools coming in, still not a fan but it is not a bad as I thought it would.

Now @Pantherman what thickness rigging line would you recommend for a 1/350 ship? I figure the PE has drove me halfway insane, might as well go all the way

Urumomo suggested ak 0.02 or 0.03 elastic rigging but I didn't fit it. I may come back to it when my skills have much improved. PM

I had to put the model away for a little bit. I ordered some PE tools and I'm going to wait for them to come in before I resume work on the PE section. Working with make due tools was not working for me, so I'm getting some proper tools.
