finished hull paint... had a little hurdle when i peeled off the main masking , spots of grey peeled up with it and i had to repaint. did the deck nonskid coloring. stern ramp taking shape. the weather deck vehicles also arrived ... i will have some desert colored humvees mixed in as well.
yes i have used the krylon red oxide primer on other builds with good results. this happens to be vallejo model air "brown".... doesnt look too brown to me though
got some good progress going. been a rainy crappy holiday weekend , perfect for the bench. i rediscovered why i hoard unused parts and pieces like many of us... i installed the deck and made guardrails out of some old plastic railings i had. dipped into the 1/350 PE for some hatches and ladders. i have much of the superstructure built up and used my obligatory file folder material to back up the windows. i had some PE "hatches" which i found one big one to create the cargo door that leads to the weather deck from below. it just didnt look right with no detail. ive decided to model it after the "cape Kennedy" . i bought a sheet of decal paper, but never made my custom decals before... i hope it comes out ok

Be sure to get a 'fixative' of some sort to protect the printing... I have an inkjet printer, not bad, loses fine detail though... I hear the laser printer ones are sharper.
I have a similar situation with my Light Tank build interior... Besides the waterslide decal paper, to apply over painted surfaces, I'm considering trying inkjet adhesive label paper as well, then tinting the paper somehow. I have a feeling the waterslide would be easier, but the label paper would be sharper.
picking away at details... the fun stuff. superstructure is built up , stack painted (dry fitted both here). note about the stack... what a major PITA to paint 3 stripes! jeez. i raided the parts bin and spiced up the ships crane a bit , added some hatches on the house where one would normally have access to the weather deck. did some railing work up forward and along the offshore sides. i used 1/350 which seemed to work on this 1/400. finally , couldnt resist setting some of the deck load in place.
Heavy equipment! Hope they're blocked and tied down!

i actually considered trying to do the lashings.... it may turn me into mr magoo though... maybe ill try some pieces of guitar string and see how it looks. these ships keep all the good stuff below (the fighting vehicles). i have some containers (milvans) coming as well as some fuel trucks. that with the humvees should make a nice realistic load out. i used to work on these types of ships.. so its a bit of memory lane as well!Heavy equipment! got back to the bench to move the project along finally after the busy springtime stuff. ive been doing railing work , installed more deck load including Milvans ( us navy speak for containers), and the ships stores crane in front of the house. these vehicles and containers all come from the UK from ebay... cant find anything like that in this scale from domestic sources. started doing some touch up here and there and began working on the stern ramp hoist wires... i dont have luck with EZ line , so it takes a while to let things dry in place and this will be a multi session task.
finally received the scale HMMV's and completed the deck load. applied the plimsol mark and load line to the hull. still securing the stern ramp wires . unfortunately the close up pics reveal the shortcomings of some of my work! with my eye i cant see the railing defects... its driving me nuts now
well , im pretty much calling this one completed. i added a few more vehicles forward (sand colored) , installed life boats and matt varnished the whole model. i used my tried and true display base (generic pub signs from amazon , stained , and used cheap drawer pulls as pedestals). all secured with gorilla clear glue. its just setting up now for the night. i did try my hand at printing the "cape kennedy" name on the waterslide paper. ill try to see how they apply tomorrow. lastly, i applied a sat dome from a 3d printed accessory set i had laying around and painted the 10cm radar scanner
