My next project, the Tamiya 1/48 P-47D Thunderbolt Razorback. I am continuing my collection of Tuskegee Airmen flown aircraft.

Nice! I knew about their action in Italy, but hadn't realized they were initially deployed to Tunisia in Warhawks... so at some point, they will find their way to my bench as well!

You won't regret building it. You need nothing extra except perhaps a base to park it on.

I have the same kit in the stash, I did the bubbletop last year with Zotz decals as Rozzie Geth II, and Eduard gauges wiring on the engine and seat belts. Goes together extremely well. It was my first time painting invasion stripes, like 90 minutes to mask and seconds to paint. I'm not much into modeling aircraft, but I do have the same kit you're building as well as the Eduard P-51K profi pak which is a thick box.

I had pulled this out of my stash the other day but decided I needed to finish up 4-5 projects before starting another one! I've been reading more of the history of the pilots of my builds lately and am enjoying the depth it adds to the building experience. Enjoy the build!

This is another for my Tuskegee Airmen group. It will be overall natural metal with the top of the fuselage OD. Of course the red tail.

FANTASTIC choice!

There's a debate between razorback and bubbletop I'm lead to believe. For Mustangs I prefer the first, but for Jugs I prefer the latter. Yeah I'm weird.

I wouldn't say you're weird. We each have our own preferences.

That's a great choice of scheme!

Personally I much prefer the Razorback P-47 and P-51. There;s something really sports coupe-esque about their lines that just says 'fast'.

I can't say I have a real preference razorback versus bubble top, just most of the references for Tuskegee P-47's are razorback so that's my reason for this one.

I can't say I have a real preference razorback versus bubble top, just most of the references for Tuskegee P-47's are razorback so that's my reason for this one.

I'm working on a p47 d bubbletop right now. Beautiful plane.

There was a poll somewhere about the Razorback/Bubbletop preference by modelers I was surprised it was almost 3 to 1 in favor of the older one. I personally prefer the bubble, but both are certainly cool and I think you should have both


I had the bubbletop version underway until I screwed it up pretty bad. It is in the closet waiting for the pain to fade away so I can fix it.

Managed to get some masking done. I used a set by Montez made for the Tamiya P-47 Razorback and was very disappointed in them. They didn't fit well, the one covering the top of the windscreen is non existent and the ones that went onto the curved part of the canopy unstuck themselves. I brush painted the interior color on the canopy parts and found these issues after it dried. So I had to clean paint off the glass and then remask the canopy using Tamiya tape. Hopefully tomorrow I can get this thing primed.

That would be irritating

I've seen similar with Montex kits.

For large areas the vinyl helps avoid distortions, for very small areas (B-25 greenhouses or IJN canopies) they allow easy repositioning compared to tape. But for curved surfaces, they kinda suck.
