I'm going to paint part of the underside with a metal finish. Prepped the gloss black today. Basing the finish on these two pics. This is my first foray out of ww2 aircraft and so far it's a fun little build. I'm keeping this strictly box and may use this model to experiment with the paint a bit.

Seriously? Well that sucks because I just put the metal finish on it.Uh, dude that first photo is an F-15E Strike Eagle.
Here's a couple of F-14 belly shots …

Added the metal finish tonight and then found out my first pic is the wrong plane. Probably doesn't matter as I don't think that pic is a metal finish but rather a faded and dirty white.I'm going to paint part of the underside with a metal finish. Prepped the gloss black today. F-15s have bare metal on the rear ventral fuselage. Tomcats didn't. But your paint looks great either way.Added the metal finish tonight and then found out my first pic is the wrong plane. Probably doesn't matter as I don't think that pic is a metal finish but rather a faded and dirty white.
Haha F14.5 it is!Clearly your methods work, the black basing and the metal color over it. The result looks nice and smooth and shiny. Well done. Hey, you could call it an F-14.5![]()
Question for you since you seem to know these planes. For the part c21 should I have that extended, partially or not at all? I'm having wheels down. I wanted to be accurate with this model but my metal finish came out really good and I don't have the heart to paint it so it's an F14.5.Uh, dude that first photo is an F-15E Strike Eagle.

Sorry wig! The f14.5 was a joke someone else must have made with me. Apparently the reference plane I based using a metal finish on for the exhaust shafts (?) was an f15 not 14 so they said my plane was an f14.5.That part should be in he closed position. IIRC, those were supposed to open or extend during flights at Mach 1 and above but were found to be unnecessary and disabled completely not long after the Tomcats were operational. However … I'm not too familiar with the F-14.5 and it may be a different story.
"Glove vanes" that's an interesting term. I ended up extending them but apparently I'm just doing my own thing with this plane anyway - natural metal finish and all.well on my super tomcat they did away with them glove vanes as the navy said they were more trouble than they were worth so no glove vanes on my big 1/32 tomcat with lights

Progress is slow. I'm blaming the holidays and my wife. I tired pre-shading the panel lines. You can barely see it on the underside. Every time I try this I don't like the result and I end up spraying heavier and erasing the lines.Added the metal finish tonight and then found out my first pic is the wrong plane. Hit the top with a light coat. This is the first time I haven't covered over my pre-shading! I'm liking it. Hopefully tonight hit the bottom.Did some preshading tonight
Slow going for me. All I've gotten done is bottom coat tonight. Rough day at work and I'm exhausted.Hit the top with a light coat. This is the first time I haven't covered over my pre-shading! I'm liking it. Hopefully tonight hit the bottom.
... did you kind of do a 'reverse' shading, spraying lighter in center of panels? I tried a bit of pre-shading (new to the airbrush), and couldn't follow the panel lines. This would be an interesting alternative.preshading
Anyone notice my mistake?Slow going for me. All I've gotten done is bottom coat tonight. Rough day at work and I'm exhausted.
Thanks! Hoping to wrap this up in next day or so.Nice work! I finished a newer mold 1/72 Hasegawa F-14A last year-Iceman and Slider's machine with Top Gun decals. Those older molds do finish quite nicely, done a few myself. Looking Good.![]()
I really need to start paying more attention to directions. Realized I needed to add two more colors to this bird. Not sure my eyes could tell the differences in the shades. Topcoat is supposed to be a blue grey so I diluted it pretty heavy and sprayed lightly. Very happy with the look.Progress is slow. I'm blaming the holidays and my wife. Finished. I enjoyed this kit. A few issues with directions but overall good kit. I made a couple mistakes so will redo this in a few months. I'm happy with the paint and weathering though. Hope you enjoy.Slow going for me. All I've gotten done is bottom coat tonight. Rough day at work and I'm exhausted.
Thank you.Nice well done.
