well lads, ive crossed the threshold. the journey begins. after months of reading books and watching videos i said its time. the rough cut blocks are just to add strength and keep the frames perpendicular. plans hung on the wall

I will be following with interest.
I was given a wooden model years ago. It was a disaster for me. I did not do any research, nor have the tools, skill, or experience for the project.
Enjoy your journey.
my friend, i see what you are doing with that Iowa....... i think you have more skill than is needed! i guess it will take the same patience as doing 20 bofors guns and applying it to planks and deadeyes....

I don't recall what's in the hull unless I dig my plans out, but those blocks you added wont interfere with where the masts go?

Thank you sir.........
Your kind words, and a rain day here, motivated me to push on through a rough time I was having on the PE on my build.
I've thought about giving a wood ship model another try, now that I'm older, and hopefully wiser.....

Oh WOW! I have So MANY questions… I've had 2 wooden ships in the stash for a number of yrs now, just knew it was still beyond my abilities and I lacked the space to display them. But I recently won this kit on auction at a steal. Sadly, upon opening the box, I think it might still be beyond my skills and I'm contemplating buying Model Expo's SeaBright Surf Dory as a starter kit to screw up… But I had never thought to look to YT for videos on learning this craft. If this takes hold, I'm going to be selling a lot of my stash!

I will be following along with much interest. Best of luck on the rest of the build, it's looking beautiful

made some good progress today on the second layer planking, plus inside bulwarks. i did tackle something unexpected that was nagging... when i first went to install the keel , i was looking all through the kit for a single piece part.. i gave up and figured it was missing so i fabbed one up from one of the "sprues". however just recently i realized the kit supplied the walnut stern post and front prow / keel as separate pieces. i almost saidd the heck with it , but it was nagging me , so i cut out what i had there and had to trim and fit the correct keel piece, took some fiddling , and thank god i didnt mess up the planking , but i think i will have a good fit. i have it contoured well , and will install it once all the planking is done. its been an adventure so far

made some good steps tonight... installed hawse holes, channels , eye bolts / rings , cleats , drilled the holes fo r the masts and dry fitted to get the correct angle. finally had time to taper one mast and actually step it! the room smells like walnut... little different than CA and paint

That looks like fun.
I'm curious, does the kit come with sails, if so, what are they made of?
So the kit doesn't come with sails, but there is cloth available of course but i would have to take it to a tailor to run stitching in the right pattern. I was thinking about doing furled sails on the boom but still would have to get a seam done to attach the mast rings to make it look right. So I'll probably leave this one bare poles

dipped my toes into some rigging tonight. got the spanker boom in place , tiller , deckhouse chimney stacks, and did two of the lower deadeyes with the straps. ive watched countless vids of people doing these things... its odd to be doing it myself now! i hope i dont mess it up in the last stages
