HI WtShark glad you will be followin along on my build of this carrier an yes i'll make mistakes but dont we all so see how i get on as ive done all the portholes in the hull an now goin to try an fit the tiny bilge keels as on my big 1/72 scale hms tiger they were about an 1/8th thick so i could drill them out to fit steel pins that than fit into the hull so the b-keels dint get knocked off but i havnt actually looked at the one for this ship yet will do tomorrow but wheather i can do this on these may be to small an ive got to figure out what im goin to light up

I wouldn't worry too much about mistakes, I think we tend to be far more critical of our own builds. Have fun, and don't let a small mistake ruin it for you. That's my motto anyway... and what my wife tells me when I have a meltdown over a small smear of glue or put the wrong part on.... LOL

thanks for the link sir an yes my missus jen says i get to critical when im tryin to hard as thats when the shakes hit an she then hold my wrist to keep me steady to do a very small part an it a success cheers sir

HI guys SORRY for not posting any updates on this model as been busy tryin to fix a blooming great dent in my car door as hit a metal post on a car park in the dark evenig but its all done now thank good ness so now i can get back to the hornet build

HI GUYS well im back on the hornet an no ive not done much today as got freinds comin so jen has called me downstairs to see them an not bein rude by stayin upstairs urg but at least ive fitted two parts an they are the rear bilge keels as there are 4 on the model but they are very awkward to fit even with the pins ive left on them as they must go on at a 45 deggree angle an the main front ones are to be curved so had to pack up now as they will take qiute a bit to fit but on the rear ones they went on fairly good as makers have put some marks on the hull but thats about all so ive have drilled out some over sized holes for the bilge keels pins to fit in the hull will fit the front ones tomorrow an now some pics

AN HI Kevin on your battle wagon did you have any cut outs on the hull to make fitting the bilgle keels easyier ?

Not cutouts, but just scribed lines for placement. I used masking tape to hold them in place at the correct angle until the dabs of CA glue dried completely, because they have a slight curve to them that the instructions don't really show.

YES Kevin you are right there as ive also just got some scribe lines to fit the keels to but ive use the pins that the keels are fitted to the spruces an just marked them out with a pencil an then dilled holes in the hull as dont have to worry about them leakin as it wont be on the water but you would have thought they would have shown how much they curve so its just as well that ive done loads of big r/c scratchbiult hulls to know a genaeral idea of how these keels fit on the hull phew an glad you got your fitted ok an did you have 4 like my ship or just one big one ? on each side ?

OH MY Garwd Kevin sorry for askin you that as i dint notice on your plan that you do just have one big one each side god it must be the heat as its bloomin hot here today an makin me slow thinkin lol an think these instrucktions are not that good what is your opinion ? as on mine it doesnt show where parts are suppoce to fit an it should do for the money we paid for these kits AARCHHH

Yes, I'm finding the instructions are a little vague in some areas. This is only my fourth Trumpeter kit. I also built a 1/35 locomotive and two 1/16 armour kits of theirs. I remember I found the locomotive instructions not so straightforward as well.
It's most likely my inexperience with the subject matters. I've built armour kits almost exclusively since returning to the hobby.

YES Kevin im finding it hard to understand where some parts fit on my horrnet as im used to big 10ft plans of my r/c scratch built ships where i had a true scale plans so to come down to these vauge instructions is a bit of a problem for me but hopefully we both will be able to build our models to be proud of

Hey Boatman, I'm starting a Trumpeter USS Hornet CV-8, 350 scale. When I bought the kit they did not have a 200 scale. That is fine for me; 350 is big enough. But if they had one back then I would be building a 200 today. It seems we will attacking the same theme I will be representing her on 18 April 1942 at take off. HI Sailor great to see you are building the same ship as me but in 1/350 scale an yes i was lucky gettin my 1/200 scale as hannants dint normally stock it at that scale as its big an i gather you will be doin the dolittle raid on japan like im doin well good luck sir an we can bounce ideas off each other if you like as i will enjoy looking at your build while im doin mine WOW we are getting some great ship builds on this forum what with Kevin building his big battle wagon an another guy sorry cant remember his name building his PLAN DESTROYER an NOW us TWO ON the CARRIERS HORNET an i hope soon that the kit makers will bring out a 1/200 scale USS NIMTZ carrier as that to me is the ultimute carrier so i could build her for the film the final countdown an yes i have scractbuilt her in 1/144 scale with all her planes for R/C an she sailed lovely for 3 yrs till i sold her as she was nr 9 ft long an as im gettin on in yrs could not trnsport her so she had to go

Missed the start of this Chris.Havent been on here much.Good job you werent at Littleport model show on 22nd June.Modelsforsale had some big old maritime kits.Huge boxes and i remember seeing Hms Hood etc.

WOW Richard yes like bigger kits but ive now got to hold back on the really big models as thats why i had to sell my big USS NIMITZ as it was so heavy it took 3 people to lift her into the water an im now to old to lift her in two halves so would not have made any difference as wishing in one hand an what you can do in the other well not good for me nice to hear from you sir

Real shame you had to sell The Nimitz.Not good if it was a physical effort to move her.The kits i saw had boxes over 3 foot long.Mainly Trumpeter,I saw on Youtube other night a channel that previews new kits to be released.Loads of maritime stuff coming out from so many companies ive never heard of.Lots of Japanese cruisers etc.I do like The Battle of the River Plate action and see "Flyhawk" is bringing out Hms Achilles,I have never built a ship ever.When i was in my teens we had a model shop in Bishops Stortford called " Garnells",Always renember the Old Matchbox Flower class corvette in the shop window.It looked a fair size back then.See some amazing models at shows.Hope you are keeping cool.
Plenty of ice cream for you both.

HI Richard well my NIMITZ was not to bad to lift when she was in two halves the lift probs came when she was screwed togeather an had her big batts in her it may not have been to bad a prob but up NORWICH the club just asked nicely to have our big table with nimtz on about 10ft from the pond side to allow the general public to walk up an veiw the ship an not cause an obstruction to the public

so to get nimtz in the water she had to be carried that far by up to 3 persons but not me as ive had back trouble for yrs an also nimitz would not fit in my next car so she had to go but at the moment a chap called dan down in portsmouth bought her from the chap who bought her from me an he is still sailing her down there an he sent me some pics an i was amazed as i scrartchbuilt her over 20yrs ago so it looks like i did a good build an he said it the best model he's ever seen of a big carrier so he is happy an thats all that matters

HI GUYS wel the build is still goin an over the last couple of days ive drilled out the pin holes to hold the big front bilgle keel in place an here a pic an it was a very awkward part to fit due to the curve of it against the hull on both sides

an a side view shot to show off the curve in the keel an god it was a job to fit in place as it kept tryin to twist around flat but i think i have got it reasonably right

Next job was fit the A frames to hold the prop shafts steady an here is a big A frame what fits near the prop an bu gum they were made of very hard plastic as it took me all my time to cut them off the sprues
