The Mirror Has Two Sides

Re: Odysseus Twins

All right, got a little work done on these today. Mostly concentrated on the second hull for this update.

Started off by grinding down a lot of the excess thickness on the upper hull section. I also removed the alignment pin holes to make lining things up easier.

With that mostly done, I then trimmed up the overfill up by the B/C deck area

Cut the hole for the deflector and mounted it with CA glue. This insertion turned out better than the first one.

Last thing I got done today was to try and make up for the huge underfill I got on the lower hull.
Rather than try and grind that all out, I opted for what looked like a better solution. I decided to add filler plates with Aves.
Basically, I filled in the problem sections, then pressed it into the mold to get what's seen here.

Re: Odysseus Twins

Hi Quaralane , coming along great with this ...you lost me at b/c deck area ,as I have to confess I know nothing about these ,but I do enjoy seeing the work and the finished models ,keep at it :)

Chris.

Re: Odysseus Twins

Thanks, Chris.
Sorry for that, a little Trek terminology got in there.

Re: Odysseus Twins

No worries Quaralane ,like I said ,I enjoy the builds ,Im just not up on all the sci fi stuff ::) ,but some interesting things going on here :)

Chris.

Re: Odysseus Twins

I'm also not up to date on sci fi but man the amount of work you put into this is inspiring ! I do know that the sci fi guys are very picky about accurate details. There is probably a lot of time invested beyond the build to achieve that goal.

Re: Odysseus Twins

@RocketSilo,
There are definitely advantages in working with my own designs, thougn

Re: Odysseus Twins

I think, that so to say braking the border between the main hull from Ent and the casted part turned out excellent - good work!

Re: Odysseus Twins

Quick update for today.
Went in ands fixed the corners of the pour on the top of the hull with a little bit of Aves Apoxie Sculpt
odysseus-twins-41.jpg

Now, for the last major mod of the stock hull.
I needed to add in the twin dual torpedo launchers to the saucer edge.
To do this, I measured out where the openings should be and notched them out.
That done, I levelled out the openings from behind with some Aves, then laid down the tubes using 1/16" brass tubing.
To secure the tubes, I laid down another little bit of Aves over the tops.

Re: Odysseus Twins

Getting where it needs to be. I will stay tuned to see what you do with those struts.....

Re: Odysseus Twins

Vertical struts are likely to be balsa. The ones between the nacelles will likely balsa with a styrene core.
Probably start on those tomorrow

Re: Odysseus Twins

Wow - finally caught up with the build (note to self, visit SMA daily)

Excellent work Quaralane

Re: Odysseus Twins

Thanks, Boots.
Grendels, you need wait no longer.

Small update on the build.
Started work on the struts today.

Started with the vertical struts that come out of the main hull. These were cut from 1/4" balsa.
Later, I'll seal them with PVA glue and cut the detail into them.
odysseus-twins-44.jpg

For the cross struts between the nacelles, I'm taking a different approach.
To get the pattern and size right, I glued a couple of printouts of the strut to a sheet of styrene.
odysseus-twins-45.jpg

I cut the patterns free of the sheet, resulting in these templates.
odysseus-twins-46.jpg

After cutting some 1/8" balsa to the right size for the struts themselves, I glued the pieces to the plastic templates.
Once the glue is set, I'll shape the struts to the right profile, then add the center pod and detail the assemblies.
