Tamiya 1/48 scale Avro Lancaster BIII build

Well, summer has been taking a toll on my modelling efforts but, I've gotten more done on the port side flaps and the starboard side engine nacelles.

I decided to go with chromate yellow for my flaps as POS is sporting it right now. I think it will look really cool against the black underbody as in this

POS is also wearing chunky tires at the moment so I'll stick with those from the kit. I think the look really cool chunky 8)

I was working on the rear turret and found a real bone scratcher of a canundrum.


Have a gander at Tamiya's instructions here and notice the direction of the gun mounts.

Can you spot it? note the successive position of the gun barrels as well. Starting to think this kit is really messed up.....

Can you flip the part that the barrels insert into over, end for end. Wouldn't that make the barrels stagger the same as your referance photo?

yes, easy fix, more just lamenting the fact that this instruction sheet was obviously not proof read by the higher-ups in board room. And I expected more from Tamiya, it is an old kit though.

I agree with the piece being upside down. Why would they mould a groove in the middle of the machine gun's action, unless that is supposed face down where you would not see it. And that will make the stagger correct. Good eyes. A less dillegent person would not have caught that until they already glued it together.

A little more progress. The ailerons on this kit are a bit........inaccurate?

As you can see the control surface is much too thick and I have never found one photo of them having those ribs?,,,.

So I ground them off with a Dremmel and instead of hours of sanding.. I laminated them with thin card stock, re-scribed and riveted where
neccesary and there it is.

Looks really good. I think that the new surfaces look much better. It's amazing to me that you're finding so many off-details with this kit - normally I think a Tamiya kit will be pretty good - but I guess it's an old one. It will just need a little more love than a newer engineered kit.

Actually I'm honestly having a blast with this kit. Mostly because I'm putting more of myself into it and truly making it mine. This is also why I try to
avoid aftermarket parts as they are expensive and take that feeling away (for me anyways).

Was able to start painting one of the wings. Nice break from all the sanding and filling and cutting cardstock.


Tried preshading for the first time.

A little over the top so I knocked it back with my camo colours very thin.

Not bad IMHO. get some decals and weathering wash on and it will look the part I think.

Ialarmu, you're doing a very nice job on this old chestnut of a kit. Love your scratch built flaps. It's always nice to see someone have a go at it using their own skills rather than using aftermarket items. (Fellow herders, I'm not putting down aftermarket parts, just saying it's nice to see someone using or expanding their modeling skills by scratch building). Keep up the good work! I am looking forward to seeing more of your build.

Final 2 coats of future, I added some rivets with my rivet wheel. gave a wash with some promodellers
wiped it off. This is 2 coats of dullcote just applied.
