Hi folks. :)

With my Tank commander bust nearly finished ,Im keen to get onto my next figure project .This time a full figure ....well two actually :)
This one is a 120mm vigentte from Verlinden .I've had it below the bench for a couple of years now and have really took the urge to do it .
The scene depicts Napoleons retreat from Moscow after suffering a massive defeat ,not just from the Russians ,but thousands of soldiers were lost on the long march back to France during the Russian winter . To give you an idea of the size of the defeat ....Napoleon started his campaign in Russia on the 24th June 1812 with an army of approx 500,000 By the time he had retreated to the border of France in November 1812 he had approx 27,000 left !!! During that campaign Napoleon fought one of his biggest & bloodiest battles ' The Battle of Borodino' in which he lost 70,000 men from the 250,000 that went into battle .
Anyhoo ,enough history lessons ,if you want to read a bit more on the subject you can do so here ...

Now a look at the piece .......

The viginette shows two French Grenadiers ,one still walking and looking at a fallen comrade ,set during the depth of the Russian winter ,the base is a bit sparse so I will be adding a few extras including some groundwork and equipment etc...

Its all cast in cream coloured resin ,and I think is one of Verlindens finer casts .

The figure on the ground is actually cast into the base ,but that shouldnt prove to be a problem ....less of the figure to paint ;D

I think the sculpter has captured the features on this guy beautifully .....

So ,over the next few days I'll be finishing of the bust and getting this piece cleaned up ,removing pouring blocks ,drilling & pinning ,and laying some primer on ready for paint .

Hope you'll join me for this one .

Thanks for looking.

Chris.

Such great detail in the Chris!!! Count me in!! (Think I said that to ya already) LOL!!! ;)

:D Look Chris ! a very uncommon but higly exciting subject (at least for me). This is going to be be really good, mate.
´
Having read Karl Von Clausewitz´s "The Russian Campaign of 1.812" and therefore being impressed with the absolute military disaster in human losses (maybe, probably, the worst disaster that Napoleon´s Armeee suffered) , this subject has a lot of attractive to me.
´
Here is a short part of "The Duellists" (a not well known Riddley Scott movie back from the 70´s , and my favourite one from that director); this part of the movie happens during Grand Armee´s long, painful and terrible retreat from Moscow... the sense of disaster and suffering is very well represented:

Maybe this clip can give you additional info about the faded colors of the uniforms, etc...
This is going to be great, Chris :D

Nice to have you along gentlemen :)

Jelly ,thank you ...thank you for reminding me I have that movie some where :) ,going to have to dig it out .Had to watch the clip ,it really shows just how grim the situation was that they were in !! you are correct ,this was the biggest loss for Napoleon . Good to see Im not the only one here interested in the Napoleonic period ;)

Chris.

Definitely joining you on this one Chris, never seen the movie but watched the clip, grim to say the least. I'm sure you will capture that in this build. Wish I'd listend in history class lol

I remember my friend painted this set many years ago and I really liked it how it turned out. So this will be a trite watching you making this kit come to life with your painting skills.
Cheers

Hi chaps ,

I've made a bit of a start at this one over the past couple of evenings , Generally cleaning up and I drilled and pinned the arms on the walking figure (not glued) I also pinned the legs on him ,but they are fixed in place . Once all those parts were ready and washed I blew a couple of light primer coats on ...ready for paint .
The walking Grenadier is only set on for the pics ,he wont be fixed on till much later .

I will be starting the paint with the soldier on the ground ,I need to do him first so I can build the ground work up around him a bit .

Thanks for looking.

Hi chaps.

I got started with the oils on this one . As I said ,Im starting with the man on the ground .Its a bit of a challenge painting his face ,He needs to look like he's freezing ,starving and probably very ill .This is the first time I've attempted this sort of thing ,but Im enjoying the challenge .
So far I have basecoated the face with an acrylic mix of pale flesh ,then mixed up the oils .This is where his face is very different from any other I have done so far .Instead of the usual brown/flesh mixes I was using Prussian Blue ,Crimson Alzera and Titanium White ,I only used the slightest touch of Burnt Sienna in the shadow mix .

Anyhoo ,got the first sitting done ,still got lots more to do here ,but hopefully you can see where its going . ???
