My Moebius 2001 EVA Pod

I saw 2001 when it came out the summer of 1968 in Cinerama in downtown Tampa and it so wowed me it became my favorite movie and pushed me into working for NASA. So when Moebius came out with its series of 2001 kits I picked them all up. I still have half in the boxes for building someday but 3 years ago I did the EVA Pod. I wanted it lit and initially bought a lighting kit but was let down by it. I also bought the lighting hardware standoff kit but ended up not using it after seeing what it was like. Ultimately I lit it myself with a huge number of LEDS in discrete and ribbon forms. I read some hints on lighting all those instrument panels and ultimately painted them with Rustoleum primer and then sanding it off the surfaces which worked great to fill in the interstitials. It ended up a massive parallel circuit and I built light boxes to place behind each panel. It was a huge job and took quite a large amount of time but turned out great. I took it to the Plant City contest shortly after and it won best other scifi, best scifr/space overall, and the best of show president's award. Here are some shots.

Excellent work

The challenge of working very cleanly without weathering, but still making it not look like a plastic model is hard to pull off

This is a subject I would love to build someday.

Oh, here's the awards from the contest. Sadly due to mobility issues I've mostly stopped attending contests. I did Wonderfest 10 years in a row starting in 2009 but wasn't having the issues then.

WONDER FULL MODEL very well done sir an how big is it ? an what power are the lights in side the pod ? an i would love to see the complete build is it on this forum ? an very well done on the awards an yes i see this film when it came out an was wowed also an did you build the orion space craft that was entering the space staion as i though with the blue danube music it was fanstatic an throughly enjoyed the film but was a bit dissapointed at the ending where bowman went throught the time bar if i have got that right as i have read several books on the film

an to be honest i enjoyed better the 2010 film of where jupiter is turned into a second sun for me that was a very good ending to two brilliant films

an to be honest i enjoyed better the 2010 film of where jupiter is turned into a second sun for me that was a very good ending to two brilliant films

It's about 10.5" in diameter roughly. The lighting is all LEDs with some discrete and some strip LEDs. I built the "light boxes" very roughly but they worked perfectly blocking the light from the back and sides and "forcing" it out from under the panel. It was a huge amount of wiring and soldering. I initially bought a lighting kit but had hardly started getting ready to use it when I realized it wasn't going to be great. I then just planned the lighting and built as I went. Here's a few pictures on the bench as I was building it. It powered by a 12V external power supply via a jack in the bottom of the pod. All the LEDs had the requisite resistors on them to use the 12V power supply. The two side RMS domes can be removed to get to the insides if necessary.
