First one on the left is US Army OCP (Operational Camouflage Pattern) during deployments. The second is ACU which is generally worn in training and garrison.

Left pattern. IIRC, the right pattern was deemed ineffective and stricken from use in combat zones… A HUGE boondoggle, sadly. I'm not so sure the urban patterns wouldn't have worked though, at least in low light conditions. But you can't expect a soldier to carry multiple BDU's waiting for the right time to use them. Or even if reversible, having the opportunity to pull that switch off…

you can't expect a soldier to carry multiple BDU's waiting for the right time to use them.

You don't need to — what you do, is issue them a uniform in a colour or pattern that fits the environment they will be operating in. All the rest of the colours and patterns can stay in warehouses.

The idea behind UCP was that it would be effective in as many environments as possible, thereby saving the cost of having to have multiple sets of uniforms in different colours and/or patterns. Unfortunately, it was only effective in a very limited range of environments, and elsewhere often stood out more than it blended in. I read things like US Army soldiers on exercise with those of other countries being told to stay behind so they wouldn't give the unit away purely by their uniform being so visible, for example. This video is quite telling in that regard:

Great observation… but why didn't the MaxxPro roll past a bit more after dumping the Strike Team and more importantly , WHY isn't the MaDuce manned and pointed in the most likely direction of action, ready to give fire support or fire suppression… ‍
