graphics help needed

see my avatar? I keep trying to match the gray of the background with the eyedropper but it keeps coming out too dark. What am I doing wrong?

if your using photoshop make sure you're not using the web safe pallet in the color selector. It will snap to a color inside the web safe pallet which is limited to 256 colors.

How do I know which palette I'm using and how to get to the other one?

I see what you mean. Print sCreen - paste into photoshop. Use the eyedropper tool to seleCt the bg Color.
