Airfix kits. Are they good kits worth building?

Good to hear about Airfix recovering their reputation. I built a 1/24 P51 in the 1990s that was a mess, last kit I've even considered from them, until reading this.

My RAF Flight Sargent father introduced Airfix kits to me in 1956. Yes they were crude in the start but are a stable start to any prospective modeller today, and I still build them although I am 77 on Monday coming!

When my grandfather turned 81, he said "Great now I'm 18." Age is always read backwards when you get above 60 according to him

I must be getting old. When I was a kid Airfix was pretty much synonymous with plastic model kit, and I grew up in Norway. Despite living in a country which was almost like an east block country apart from no shortage of toilet paper and with well stocked grocery stores, we had access to plenty of different brands. Airfix had a special place though, and every kid knew when you said Airfix you were talking plastic models

A preference for Cold War jets was mentioned.

The new Airfix 1/48 SEPCAT Jaguar is reputed to be a superb build as are the only slightly older 1/48 Buccaneer with two versions available, RAF and FAA.

I mainly build 1/32 scale and so I rarely touch 1/48 (and Airfix) but because I love the Bucc I did build one and I have to say it was an outstanding kit that stands its ground against the Tamiya 1/48 F4 and F14 that I also was tempted to get.

Just make sure you get recent Airfix kits and you should be fine.
