Nice clean work ;)

A little too clean! Hopefully we take care of that soon. I think I need to really tone down that yellow, too. This is also practice for a 1/48 x-wing, and I never realized how very little reference there seems to be. Particularly lacking is reference to red 5. Does anyone have some advice or resources they could point me toward for x-wings in general, and red 5 in particular?

Added a mini Mark!

References to Red 5??? Lacking??? Hardly! Just got to know where to look!

This one is probably the best: http://www.modelermagic.com/?p=3295

Re: 1/72 Red 5 X-Wing

Thanks for the links!

I guess I should have been more specific in that I meant photographs of the original models. However, the third one claims to be exactly what I am after! I love these and will definitely use them! I'm not sure how I missed those photos before. I seem to have trouble locating things on that site.

The rest of the links, though truly amazing builds, are replicas. Just a personal preference to work from original reference when possible. I picked this habit up in working on Boba Fett costuming.

Again, Thanks!

no prob! i usually just use the search function on that site whenever i need something

Re: 1/72 Red 5 X-Wing

More masking, more painting. Tonight I also used u.n. White oil to soften/fade the yellows and the canopy grey a bit. I'll see what it looks like tomorrow and decide if I want to do more fading (I think I do) before moving to weathering/panel painting.

These oil processes are slow-going, and it's not nearly there yet, but I thought I'd add a few intermediate shots. Can't thank you enough for those studio model reference photos, Scootypuff!

I may have overdone it a bit on the belly. I'll have to see how the rest plays out.

Getting there...

Re: 1/72 Red 5 X-Wing

I'm calling this one done! :) But I was tempted to call it "I've lost Artoo!" I hate those little decals on crazy surfaces.

The reference photos helped a lot, and this was great practice for a future 1:48 in my stash. I'll be making some modifications on that piece based on things I observed with this one. Thanks for lookin', and feel free to ask any questions!

Thanks guys! This was a fun one to put together. I'm really digging oil paints for the weathering. I'm not great at it yet, but it seems to work out.

I was looking at they 1:48 the other day and I'll definitely change some things and make some modifications to it if I ever get around to building the thing!

Cheers!

I built an X-wing years ago but I made the mistake of building one that looked like it had came out of the factory , I never even gave it a thought to making it something like the movie ...... ie weathered .
If I ever do another X-wing ....... it'll be battered ......but not like Red Three - Biggs Darklighter's X-wing that got shot down by Darth Vader kinda battered ..... just weathered ;)

Ha! You could do a whole progressive series: "The life and times of an X-Wing--from factory floor to floor of the Death Star trench."

It turned out great! It makes me want to build another one of the four (soon to be five when I get the new Bandai one next week) that I stashed away.
