I finished up the Trumpeter planes with some Pontos PE added. I'm happy with the results, except for the painting of the canopy "ribs". It's as good as it's going to get though, I did it freehand because no way I was going to try to mask off the glass.
I do like the aftermarket planes I've seen, especially the ones with open canopies, but I've spent so much $$$$$ on this project already I'm going to use these planes on the ship.
So close to starting on the three 16 inch gun turrets.

Looking great, well worth the effort as the details are outstanding. Pantherman

I finally started on the first of the three 16" gun turrets today. I have been waiting for this day since February when I started this build. The brass barrels are the main reason I bought the Pontos Detail Up kit. They are pretty nice. I think I'll have to add some counter weights to the rear of the turret, these guys are heavy.

I have the turrets, about 25 more figures, rigging, and the full length hand rails from bow to stern left to do to finish the build.

All the recent discussion of the Kingfisher made me want to share this. It is not my photo, but it is from the IPMS show in Cincinatti. If anyone knows the artist I'll be happy to update this post and give credit to them and/or the photographer.

The Kingfisher is not a very popular subject from my limited experience, the ones I've seen were 1/700, 1/350, or 1/200 as seen in this thread. The subject is a bit on the ugly side, but I do understand the interest in building the ugly-but-functional birds not just the beautiful ones.

To wit...

Hey, thanks alot Down Time.........you guys keep me motivated.
There has been times during this build I've been very frustrated, mostly dealing with all the tiny PE., and the monotony off all the 20MM and 40MM guns.
It's all gravy from now to the end. :)

Thanks, the plan right now is a new shelf on the wall just for it. Instead of a case maybe just enclose the shelf with some 1/8" lexan to keep dust and cobwebs off. It's still in the "up in the air" stage at the moment, final decisions have yet to be made.

To continue on with the Kingfisher talk.......View attachment 166894View attachment 166895
This is on-board the USS MASSACHUSETTS BB 51. I toured it again today, and I missed this display case a few months ago. They actually have quite a few models on display in the ship.View attachment 166902
We went to the New Jersey this summer. They had a lot of models on display too. Sad to say my 1/350 New Jersey wasn't as good as the one they had. This is a shot of turret 3. It looks even bigger when you have people in the shot.

Yes, they are very impressive in person! My brothers in the photos onboard the USS MASSACHUSETTS, a South Dakota class battleship, but the main guns are also 16".
