1/32 Italari Tornado IDS

This is my second build of the Italari 1/32 Tornado. My last was the GR3 version, I thoroughly enjoyed the build and was very surprised at how well it went together. I ended up with two kits as one of them was an unexpected gift when I was in hospital.

With the last build I used Kits World 3D decal detailing set and, quite frankly, they were awful and nowhere near the quality that I have seen produced by Quinta Studios. I looked for a Quinta set for this but they were not in stock but I found a set from a new (to me) Ukrainian company called Kelik and they look excellent and, unlike KW have placement instructions

HI Barry im overjoyed you are doin a tornado fast jet again as this will help me with mine when i do get to build it but that hornet must be finished firstly an i hope you enjoy this build as i shall by watching as you build sir an excited as well an no ive never herd half the after market decalls that you get as i bought some after market decals foir my big tomcat in the jolly rogers colour sceme but they splinted but i managed to paint in the parts that did an exscuse me for askin an dont answer if you dont want too but what did someone above you had their water tank burst to come down an flood you out ?

Hi Chris. It was an empty flat three floors above. Their cistern had been overflowing for a week, The flat below, also empty, was flooded and then down to the flat below that where an elderly man lives dependent on a carer. I suspect it leaked into his flat after he went to bed early evening. It then got to mine, we found to at 6am Sunday. I had to phone 999 for the Fire Brigade, I was worried about the electrics specially as a lift shaft is next door to mine. The fireman were brilliant and made forced entry to turn off the water and conducted a load of safety checks. Out agents put me up in a hotel from Sunday to Wednesday as humidifier dried my glamour. Decorators next. My flat is not as bad as the others above me which are not habitable at all.

The main cockpit parts all went together well. I have sanded some very nice detail off to accommodate the detailing set. I have also done some basic painting, sprayed a semi-gloss coat and I am ready to apply some washes before attaching the detailing set.

Beware and test fit all the way, in the instructions some of the placement is very vague.

I will post again when the detailing set has been attached.

I have applied the detailing set and most of the cockpit is finished. The seats are only loosely dry fitted for now.

I found this 3D Decal set to be excellent, far better than Kits World, it mostly fitted well but I did need to trim one side panel, not a big deal

YES B/B that what i think of at times but most of its must all be set before he takes off but if the plane get damage youd see all the red lights come on

One reason that most fighter aircraft are two-seaters.

A few more progress shots. No real problems so far. Instructions are a bit vague in places so it takes a little working out.

BRILLIANT work Barry im followin along an how is it goin togeather ? an i must admit i like the long nose tornado better what is that the recoasance vershion ? but im enjoying your build as cant wait to get started on my tornado but got to build others kits firstly AN HOW YOUR FLAT NOW ?

How can you work in a neat and organized work station like that?? Haha. Mine is total chaos and sometimes I pay for it.

It's all fun u til you lose a part and can't find it! I'm stuck on my sopwith build because I'm missing a piece of the landing gear. I wrote academy but have not heard back. Not sure what I'm going to do because the piece is beyond what I can scratch build.

WELL Ron 2 im in the same postion as im building my big 1/200 scale USS HORNET an i bought a book all about the ship an im now at the point of needing to look at it for detail purposes an i cant find it an its a big book so im thinking how can something so big dissapear as its too big for the carpet montster to swallow lol oh dear

Hmm I've got the Revell 1/32 kit but had set it aside. Now I'm wanting to pull it out. I think the Revell kit is from the early 80s though. Probably a bit more finicky.

but nice work Barry an any body know what them 6 tiny meatal bit are for on the tail ? as i remember YOU BARRY sayin on your other tornado kit that they were p/e an little buggers to fit

I am not really feeling the love for this kit. Not that it's a bad kit as such, indeed I really enjoyed the build of the GR4 version of this kit. I think that this is because I only finished the GR4 a year ago and modern jets are not my preferred WW2 subjects and I have some very nice kits calling to me in my stash, the Special Hobby Westland Whirlwind, Revell Gloster Meteor and Kotare Spitfire Vb.

But, I am getting on with it. For some reason this build lacks the excellent fit of the GR4 so it must be something I have done, a lack of care perhaps.

The main airframe is largely completed with just a few additions to do.

I am leaving off some of the more annoying etch. That 'lack of love' perhaps and I have decided to just press on and get it out of the way.

Don't let my comments put you off this kits. This does build to a really good example of the Tornado as my GR4 shows

HI BARRY yes i feel the same on my USS HORNET KIT the love is just not there as so many tiny parts an ive spent 4 hrs on it this morn an at least 2 hrs battleing the carpet monster for the tiny parts ive dropped oh dear so i know how you feel sir

I am preparing the subs for painting.

Surface prep includes a final rub down all over with a 2500 grit sanding sponge followed by a wipe down with a degreaser. Some masking is also needed and parts put on lolly sticks, cocktail sticks or self closing tweezers ready for the airbrush booth.

I have started painting.

First the stores have been painted

The Light Ghost Grey underside was painted then I masked up to paint the Dark Ghost Grey areas on the underside.

And painted.

There is still quite a lot of painted detail on the underside to do

VERY nice work Barry why does it have some small parts painted dark ghost grey as i cant see the piont of that is there a reason or is it just how it shows on the instuc ? an i'll be really glad when i can start my GR4 AS ITS CALLING TO ME but got to finish the hornet an then the big F16 before i can start on that an hope you are well sir ?
