This forum and I are not getting along; and it is because I do not know how to use it. If I start a thread, fine. I am respond to someone else's thread with "reply", fine. But, what do I do to add adational material such as progress of the build; won't there be a quote of the former post on the post?

You don't have to hit " Reply "
just post whatever additions to the existing thread you want .
you never really need to hit " Reply " , I only do if it's a response to something other than the very last post -- or I need to quote a specific point I'm responding to .

...and if it is a response to a specific comment (like this reply to part of your comment), highlight the sentence or the word, and a 'reply' button will appear below the highlighted text.
When you hit the button, the highlighted text will appear in the response area.
