1/200 PLAN DESTROYER - older class

well , i pulled this one from the stash. keel was laid last night. it was another ebay find... a "motorized" kit. seemed interesting as it looks like it is somewhere in the transition period from an older class to the new modern styles. pieces look pretty good, very minimal flash , one piece hull. the kit railings actually look decent , so im planning to use them. will see what if any aftermarket doodads will be added as i go along. probably ladders , hatches , and watertight doors.

BECAUSE Brian its the bow sonar dome to detect subs s my hms norfolk has one an most modern warships have them an the tiny bump is a traducer again for sonar if ive got it right

naa.. even years (decades rather) ago as a kid if i attempted a "motorized" model , it was always anticlimactic in the end. either the stability was all wrong or after the first circle, the thrill was gone. so no i just like building for static display. however , i see these systems have come a long way... twin screw reduction gear sets and the like... fancy stuff

HI AGAIN Domer 94 i dont blame you for not wanting to sail this model as i dont know why but plastic models just dont seem to sail as well as scratch built wood ones as its a small hull its a job to get them to be stable an sail against windage an fairly big waves as ive seen some roll over an sink as they really need what they call a drop keel on them as like my 1/200 scale uss horrnet wont be sailing but just mounted on a stand

the hornet would have a much better chance of going r/c. much better displacement. this kit actually included reverse pitch props so that you can have a proper counter-rotating twin screw setup. its rather elaborate

main deck painted and installed. painted flight deck and some of the smaller deck surfaces.

started getting into the nitty gritty today. dipped into the PE bin and added some details to the turret and missile launchers. constructed the masts , added ladders to the stacks. the launchers are quite crude in this kit.. dont even have bottoms.. just a shell that mounts to a pedestal. so i added some PE "hand rails" and a ladder. the hangar assembly has no details from the kit , so i added some generic PE hatches as hanger doors , a couple of deck doors and some vent louvers on the sides.. all aftermarket stock. finally i started firring rails to the mooring deck area... should come out nice in the end. one thing i have to say about modelling these days, there are so many option with the generic stuff offered , you always have some artistic license to freelance.. something we couldnt dream of in the 70s and 80s. also i realized this kit did not include decals.. so luckily i had a stock of 1/200 hull numbers. as far as the flight deck , not sure if i will try to paint the markings.. i havent had good luck with that
