Tool to measure scale?

Is the a tool to measure scale? I have a 1/35 Tamiya AAV, old kit with the 50 cal. AA gun. I'm proposing to scratch build a new turret that's being currently used by the USMC instead of buying one that cost 20 American. I want to get accurate proportions, I don't want the turret to look way too big or way too small.

a set of digital calipers will help out , coupled with a calculator and tech specs from online you can easily plan out your scratchbuild to scale proportions...Lowes and HomeDepot have digital calipers but be prepared to shell out about $30 dolalrs for a set
