Here's one for the "Detail Geeks" on colors and camo schemes! I had NEVER seen or heard of this little detail on Spitfires or any other WW II aircraft,
Notice the odd grey/green patch on the spine of the Spit just ahead of the white squadron band. It's a "poison gas indicator". ???????
Anyone know more about these??? Curious...............

I thought they put it where the pilot could see it , though .
doubt it is that splotch on the empennage

What is that publication?

I'd be surprised they were still using gas patches as late as 1944. Interesting as the aircraft in the foreground also has a non-standard fuselage roundel. The Mk Vs were old dogs by then.
