Getting started on the new belly tanker, some paint and fitting going on . had to trim the body a bit to make a little more room for the front end, that is really beautifully detailed. So far things are fitting up nice, we will see if it continues through the rest of the build. I will be using the drilled wheels to keep with the look of an older racer.

Between the yellow body and green accents it should stand out in the crowd. For a car with few parts it has some nice detail like the front end and the carbs with linkage and fuel lines. It even has pre made plug wires, still to see how and if they will fit. Another cool part was the leather straps holding the fuel tank.

Impressive!
Thank you Ron, for a kit with few parts it is an impressive print, the way the chassis fits the body and the detail of the front end, plus everything but the plug wires fit perfectly, well worth the 50 beens, they even finish sand the body for you, i will be looking for more kits from them.

Never heard the expression "tanker" before.

I've always been interested in the "Tankers" as race cars. My Dad (back in the '60s) would tell me of these guys that would build these things. I was interested because they used WW II fuel tanks and I wondered at the grass roots engineering that went into building one of these monsters! What a set of balls these guys had! Honestly! Would YOU climb into that thing knowing your skill set?? It's either a positive YES or an absolute NO!
Thanks for getting it out there. The engine detail is remarkable.

Wow. 5 posts in one night. Maybe these cocktails celebrating the New Year are Liberating the Inner Child.......................

Who makes the kit?
The company is Plasticmechanic he sells through Etsy. If you go to Etsy and search model cars and parts its on page 11 right now. Another co, in etsy named Hooligans has some really sweet kits, im getting ready to do a 60s twin engine digger from them next.

The reason they are tankers is because they are made from the fuel tanks called belly tanks used in WWII aircraft that needed extra fuel for long range sorties. After they were empty they would just drop them and use the wing tanks to get home. Some one out west in the late 40s looked at one one day and said hold my beer im gona make a car out of that thing and run it on a dry salt lake. They run in one of the purpose built classes called lakesters due to the open wheels, but the racers just call them tankers.

I would definatly drive one, land speed racing is my favorite motor sport and tankers have always been my favorite class. Its the most honest and purest test of speed, almost no big sponsors, just you with your foot to the floor for 5 miles, the course and the clocks. The kit is a very good print, the detail is exceptional and it all fits together well.

Wow, the Tankers is a new race subject to me, thanks for showing this off. Amazing work!
Your very welcome, its nice to turn people on to a new kind of vehicle even though its one of the very first purpose built cars to run on the salt 80 years ago. I just posted the finish pics, enjoy. I will be posting this one with its turbine powered brother in a little wile.

Just a beautiful build! All the right decals. I especially love the Moon sticker! Memories.
Help me remember some engine configuration.... flat head V-8 with six exhaust pipes.......are there two exhaust ports feeding into the center exhaust pipe?
Also, type of transmission? I see two pedals so I'm guessing an automatic with how many gears??

Thanks again for expanding our knowledge and letting us know your "purist" attitude on speed and KISS principle.

Yes sir the flat head has siamese exhaust ports in the center cylinders, the firing order is such they dont interfere with each other. It also has no push rods being the valves are in the block their stems run right on the cam lobe. The heads are also hemispherical combustion chambers with the spark plug in the center, these aspects make it a very precision assembly for its time, they make great power , they just dont run very clean do to the valves being in the block air flow is kind of poor. In these old ones gas and brake only, the trans is just a one speed transfer case, you lock it in and the car is push started, the gears in the transfer case and rear end and engine Horse Power, determine how fast its going to go. Nice to see someone else knows the KISS principle, I use it religiously when it comes to painting bodies.

Well now you've done it, you infectious swine! I went ahead and ordered my "Tanker" yesterday. He only had 9 kits left and I just had to have one in my airplane collection to stir conversations. I haven't built a car model of any sort since the '60s so will have to move slowly and get the details correct. I want to do research on some color schemes and history so I can represent those speed demons accurately. I like the wheels on the red turbo engine tanker you had so I need to hunt for as many photos as I can. Any links you can share would be appreciated. For some reason a white tank with a red nose or flame is banging around in my head right now, but who knows.
If I start dreaming of Willys gassers, vettes, cobras and Art Arfonts Green Monster, I'm sending YOU the psychiatrist bill!

Best your going to do for pics is to just google belly tanker land speed racers. Your going to get pics from beautiful to total back yard bombers. Also they come in different sizes and shapes, some are longer and thinner than the classics i have built. The paint your thinking about is a sweet design, i posted a pic for you along with some others. And dont fight the crazy these and guys that did any auto racing in the 60s were real men that had trailers just for their stones.

I got you covered on this one brother, and like i said dont fight the crazy its what keeps us all young, and admiration for these men is not taken lightly theirs is truly life on the edge.

That last shot says it all ! Balls out, flat out, wind on the googles and the bark of a small V-8 with short stacks nearing the red line!
Great shots! I've already looked around and found some good images.

My "Belly Tanker" arrived yesterday! The P-51C came a week ago. I've ordered the "Thunderbird" Bendix race decals. When I finish up this Grumman Hellcat then I'll start the tanker with some guidance from X. I plan on a simple diorama with the tanker on a salt covered base with salt on the tires and the P-51 flying overhead at an angle on a clear plastic rod. Maybe....
The scale difference doesn't bother me, it'll look cool

That sounds great i can see the picture already. To do salt on the tires, use super glue and powdered sugar. Spread a thin even layer of glue on the wheel lay out a Tony Montana size line of sugar on a flat surface and slowly roll the wheel through it. Only one pass through the sugar and let it dry for the rest of the day, then use a soft brush to remove any sugar that dosnt stick. If you try to roll it a second time it will screw up bad, by pulling big chunks off the wheel and making a nasty mess.

Roger that. It'll be a little while before a start on that, my pace is slow and mood driven, but anxious to discuss working with resin kit peculiarities once I start. Nice Tony Montana size reference! I was thinking regular table salt but I'm guessing better adhesion using sugar?

We will take it at your pace brother, some humor always gos a long way in the right context. I dont know if you can find powdered salt but yea it has to be very fine to have the right look, table salt would make your wheels look like the rim of a margarita glass. 🤪
