I had one tip I wanted to share. I use tube putties mainly (like squadron or tamiya) and I use a bit of masking tape to make sure I get them exactly where I want them.
Say I'm doing the seam along the top of an aircraft fuselage, I could put a long strip of masking tape down along each side of the seam about a millimeter or two away. I plop down the putty, smooth it a long and then whip up the tape. Tada! I get a nice clean straight line of putty right in the seam.
I just mention it because you gave Aves a plus because you can roll it into strips and put it right where you want it, kind of the same idea.
