Okay, have a new Trek buildup on the workbench.
Working with the 1/1000 Polar Lights Klingon D-7, I'm going to build up one of my own bashes.
I call her the Deathbird, and she looks a lot like this:

To help better detail the ship than I've done in previous builds, I'm going to plate her with the Aztec Dummy vinyl masks.
These pics show the beginnings of that process.

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/5

I have the aztec dummy mask for the nx-01 and I know it will be a lot of work. Especially after watching your build up. Keep it coming!!

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/6

@Grendels,
I have one advantage, though. I won't need to take mine off after the paint.

@Java,
close, but not as close as I could have been.

Okay, today's where we start actually working to make the model look like the illustration.
I started by cutting apart the main wing into the pieces I'll need.

After gluing up the wing, I modified the front bulb to hold my twin photon tubes.
I cut three pieces of brass tubing for the tubes.
Installed the twin tubes in the front. Drilled a hole in the back wing for the rear tube.
I also got the rest of the sub assembly work as far as I could before I start in on the first round of putty work.

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/7

Thanks, Grendels. One of the few advantages of being out of work is more time to get these done.

Quick update for today on this.
Today was an Aves day for the Deathbird.
I filled in the huge gaps on the nose and in the wings.
I also went in and built up the new impulse engines on the back of the hull with Aves and some lenses I had from another build.

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/7

Q - you are a scale model addict of scale model addicts - do you sleep?

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/7

Quaralane - your modelling output is crazy. You just keep building and building. I'm envious, wish I could finish half as many in the same time frame. Good work on a very original build.

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/7

@Scott,
Yes, I do sleep. Just have a lot of time on my hands right now.

@JMac,
Thanks. I figure that the only way to get the backlog cleared is to work on it.

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/7

Thanks, Grendels.
She's still got a bit to go, but she's getting there

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/8

And, now, we reach the end of basic assembly.
All of the masks are in place. The ends of the wings have been trimmed square. The engines and pylons have been mounted.
The boom is in place, as is the hangar deck.

At this point, the next step is paint.

I use those same sanding sticks for detail work!! Nice segment!

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/8

Really interesting series of photos, comments & videos. Amazing customization which I'm sure adds a lot of complexity to a snap-together kit. I would really like to see the video of your painting techniques if you have the time & patience.
Inspiring stuff! Thanks for taking the time to share!

Re: Klingon "Deathbird"-WIP 2/8

Thanks, Nickt666.
And yes, it does add some complexity to the build.
Not a lot of technique to my main basecoats of paint.
I use rattlecan and spray outside on a rotary base.

@Grendels,
I saw those and immediately grabbed a couple of different packs

Finale for this build today.
Started the day by getting a coat of grey primer on her.

With that dry, I went in and hit her with an overall coat of Testors' "Graphite Dust" to give her a nice, dark, metallic look

Once that was dry, it was time for some decals and final details.
The impulse engines were painted in with white, followed by red.
The raised paneld around the forward torp tubes were hand-painted red.
All of the grilles were given a coat of black wash.
Lastly, I took a few of the markings from the kit's decal sheet and put them on the wings.
