i decided to pull a surprise out of the stash today.. its been forever since i did a sub. it should be a fairly quick enjoyable build in between wood kits. i want to model this as it would look after being drydocked right before the fall of the USSR , all beat up from cold war duty , then left to rot on the hard after the navy runs out of funds. i want to test out some of the marine growth / rust washes ive had staring at me. so far cut out the conning tower windows to be filled in with green clear material after painting. then cut out the hull vents and used some 1/350 railing behind to simulate grating. the hull goes together with 3 brutal seams... and for some reason this plastic doesnt like the CA too much.... its was a bit of a chore and will take some decent amount of cleanup

tonights folly. conning tower dry fitted. ive been researching the russian cold war sub graveyards to get an idea of the weathering etc. ill have to decide how beat up to make it... will be fun though. i have to find a red star to put on the forward end of the tower... those were iconic. all i know is the soviets came up with some weird ass sub deigns... interesting stuff
have to straighten out a couple of the appendages up top.... this plastic did not do well with CA. and that main horizontal seam is a little problematic. i think i wil start my waterline weathering there... so it should hide it pretty well

starting to mess with some different washes... adding / adjusting slowly. i think i can achieve the desired effect hopefully. thinking about putting her in some sort of drydock scenario... taken out of the water, then the plug got pulled on maintenance. only found a few pics of what they may look like

added some more salt streaking and highlighted the fouling line... and in honor of member "grumpa" who came up with some killer art work titles for his dioramas.....when im finished im going to call this one "wind of change". all you cold war kids will get it..

Wow! though I am not a submariner, I do appreciate great and realistic weathering when I see it.
Excellent work my friend!

Jim.

bouncing back and forth between planks on the wood model bench... i threw together what will be the dry dock. the foam glue takes forever to cure though , but you get the idea. i have some stone veneer paper from my model RR stuff... will do the wall , and the bottom ill paint with some textured "concrete " stuff. then planning to use some powders and pigments to make it messy and look like no work has been dont on the sub in 2 decades... will have to fab up some sort of gangway as well.

the stage is beginning to be set.. a little faux pas happened though... i went to spray the concrete textured rattle can stuff , and the foam DID NOT like it. sooo i let it dry a bit then topped it off with some regular acrylic generic paint. its drying now , but i guess i got some unplanned detail and texture to the drydock floor.. finally glued the embossed stone paper on the upright. will see where is takes me from here...

in between steps on the wood bench i get a little going on some side stuff. i put on the top of the drydock wall , and did some needed weathering on the floor and wall. some mud and moss effect with acrylics. finally gorilla glued the sub to the blocks. never knew a graving dock that wasnt muddy as hell. going to be adding some details little by little... i have to fab up a work gangway , i have chain railings that will be going up around the topside... you can see i added some drums and ill add some misc hoses / acetylene tanks... just crap you find on a work site . i found some 1/144 worker figures i will place eventually. lurking in the back is a 1/200 sovremenny ... i had started to drill port holes then got caught up in the wood kits.

Looking good!

messed around with some details tonight. assembled and painted the work platforms (found them on ebay in the correct scale..( i think they are for gundam stuff). i used one as an "observation platform " of sorts on the drydock wall. i havent placed the other permanently yet. installed one length of the chain railing.. will have to touch up shiny spots. finally used some scraps to start building a frame for a companionway weather shelter. ill eventually find either a piece of cloth or something to make it look like a weathered tarp.

worked on some more details... i kit bashed a gundam walkway kit into a gangway.. i think it nailed what i needed to do. i installed some more railing , weathered up a 20' work container. installed another observation platform on the forward end of the drydock wall. im trying to come up with an idea for the canvas that will go over the companionway shelter. im trying a tissue soaked in coffee and left to dry... will see what happens

couple of more railing sections on the drydock wall and going to call this one finished. i added the coffee dyed tissue to the weather shelter frame. the figures and acetylene tanks are from gundam stuff found on ebay. i think the figures work well.. give it all some scale. the paint bottles are propping up the railing sections as the white glue dries

Very nice!
Agree about the figures.
Your level of detailing is so convincing, the paint bottles were a shock: the model is much smaller than I thought!
i thought 1/144 was a pretty good scale for a sub actually. i dont think i would attempt this in 1/350. the weathering tends to look a bit extreme in the photos , but in person its much more subdued
