Well, generally I would agree however, I've not built models since I was 13 (I'm 66).

I'll be 61 soon and got back into the hobby in the 1st half of 2024 after about 25 years of not touching a model. I totally understand your point of view, in my case I had a collection of airbrushes and a compressor already.

I've been greatly encouraged by at least one Youtuber who gets great results using mostly rattle-cans and other techniques.

I do not doubt this one bit! A guy who won best in show for automotive subjects used clear gloss from an auto-parts store. It absolutely can be done!

LOL. This guy uses floor polish! I tried it and yup, works and produced a showroom shine.
