Proof that my plan to stay focused on only one or two builds was faulty .

My affinity for armor and my habit of loitering around Armorama and making tank noises in my head ....

I've started on this Tamiya Jagdtiger ( Henschel ) which must be the simplest kit I've begun in a while .
Pretty much flawless Tamiya quality .

But since I never build anything close to OOB -- time to polute it 8) :

Other than the kit , I'll be using this AM barrel and portions ( maybe all ) of the extensive Voyager PE set

20160312_141839_zpsyupjgwd0.jpg

This is obviously a " What If " vehicle .
If the war had been protracted --- possibly the eastern front had been prosecuted differently .

I intend to do a permutation of "Urban Camo " with the tank fitted with slat or rod stand-off armor .

Using Vallejo Green Grey as a base

... and taking advantage of the materials and subject

lengthening the barrel 19 " to make it a 12.8 cm L 59 ( vs L 55 )

Lovely rifling ;D

Using the link & length track

Be installing the track today --
Then once the gun mount is assembled , I can design and build the turret basket and go from there .

Cheers !

Been there, done that. Many unfinished kits here, and many more calling out to be built.

Personally I find if I loose interest in a particular kit, it is better to box it up and put it aside to come back to it when interest comes back to it to finish it. Rather than put a lack luster effort into finishing it.

Sounds bad, but I probably have 35-40 in progress kits at any one time (mind you that is out of a stash that totals about 1000.)

Totally agree with that !

... and I'm sure if I were the proprietor of a hobby shop I would have just as many going .. ::)

Well . One track is installed ::)

It's been a long time since I built a tracked vehicle and I've never used the Link & Length tracks before .
But I think they are more convincing than the band tracks .

After installing the axles last week , I thought " meh - probably shouldn't have cemented the idler wheels in place ...

Surprised that Tamiya doesn't suggest this in the instructions : ( part A-10 )

20160320_132233_zpsynbefqsk.jpg

I primed , painted and partially weathered the track parts on the sprue beforehand :

20160318_171702_zpsmyoil0ik.jpg
20160318_162318_zpsegxuxkvs.jpg

I certainly had no confidence in painting them once they were installed ???

I was aware that I would have fit issues because of the dimensional changes from the coatings and in hindsight I would have temporarily linked the pieces together prior to the painting to preserve the raw plastic at the joints ...

I did not attempt to remove any coatings at the joints prior to assembly -
Which resulted in a gain of about 3 - 4 mm in the total track length ,,
an easy issue to compensate for by rotating the idler wheel aft but it was welded in place so I had to slice it free and remount it in the proper position .
I intend to continue with this method on the second track as to keep them identical

They look the part --- just got to keep the keen-eyed rivet counters far enough away .. ;D

Ciao !

Thanks , Q ;D

I had ordered a set of Friuls for this thing but canceled it and went with the kit parts .
The Fiuls cost more than kit of course and I had to make that decision due to budget constraints .

Nothing like experience though ! ::)

All of the difficulties I had this round can be avoided next time .. Yay !

Cheers ,
Uru

I'm with Patrick.
I like the look of the track and the master weapon.

Jim

Thanks , Jim ;D

I just noticed from the last photo that the upper track had loosened and wasn't sitting atop the wheels .
Fixed that !

Thanks , ND ;D

It's all about the cannon ;)

Here's what has happened :

I removed the majority of the mount and used only the upper arms and pivots of the original .
Then mounted to the turret floor ( 2 mm )

20160322_163147_zpsboqobjli.jpg
20160323_020519_zpsjqyq4ehf.jpg

The turret basket floor spans across the hull sides into the sponsons

20160323_141016_zpsvaogduzg.jpg

1.5 mm feet attached to simulate the height of the turret ring

20160323_142128_zpsebejc6ew.jpg

Basically unchanged silhouette

I have to rework the roof - adding and deleting ..

Adding a cupola ( Panther G ) - so I'll need to bump out the turret side

... and remove the crescent hatchway , replaced with a fixed periscope sight .

Probably delete the starboard periscope .

I'm adding counter-weights to each side of the turret on the aft end - cantilevered out .

The cannon is massive . The barrel and breech together weight 3600 kg :o , and all that mass is bearing outboard of the turret ring in addition to the mondo 250 mm frontal armor

I initially planned on doing interior detail in the turret but I may just present her all buttoned up :P

So -- initially I wanted to see what would be required to maintain the bulk or all of the original mount and it's windage movement ;D

;D

;D

-- - About as low as possible without raising the floor and even then it doesn't give you much .
I was able to maintain the original head-height of the fighting compartment , ~ 64 ", with the current turret

This is one of the pics that was supposed to be where the " Photobucket is nuts ! pic " is .

??? ??? ??? ???

I couldn't put a pic there ---- any pic !?? WEIRD .

this one wouldn't go either :

Decided to build her buttoned up .

.. .. making it easy to counterweight the barrel ;D

All rite !

Things are progressing :

I built the cupola bump-out from Aves -- oversize initially.
I always bore holes to get a mechanical joint when possible although Aves bonds fairly well to styrene :

20160327_101446_zpsek7ska7k.jpg20160327_105419_zpsxmadri1y.jpg20160327_122421_zpsmmp5xkgw.jpg20160327_210416_zpsxhlot7qt.jpg

Added a drop-down hatch for spent casings at the rear-right

20160327_210530_zpss1jfcgsf.jpg

I used this PE weld bead for the first time .
Just around the roof perimeter ...
This lead to an inordinate amount of extra work to blend them in --- if I use them again , they really need to be set into a scribed line . At least this size , which are the widest on the fret

20160328_123955_zpsxejxvqu0.jpg

I used the trusty method of softened styrene rod around the cupola

Slimmed down here :

20160329_190103_zpsz4wiwy9r.jpg

Good shot of the added ballast on the breech end .

I also removed the Nahverteidigungwaffe from the roof -- she'll have a bevy of S-mine launchers at the "bustle" of the turret :

20160330_205446_zpsk8tqfsqi.jpg

you can read about the above : http://armorama.com/modules.php?op=modload&name=SquawkBox&file=index&req=viewtopic&topic_id=246034&page=1

.. directly to the Nahverteidigungwaffe page -- http://www.custermen.net/nahvert/nah.htm

I was tired of the front heavy turret so I bonded these two 13 mm ball bearings in Aves into the rear corners

More Better Balance

Telescopic sight fitted --

Counter-balance weights and bolster for hull deck :

This needs to be blended into the top deck .
There will be bump-outs at the hull sides for all this

I'm going to put her in a small dio with 6 - 8 infantry bunched up behind with one on the call-box phone mounted @ the right rear of the tank .

BTW -- I don't know what is going on with the Photobucket / SMA nexus , but I keep getting those " no-go " place holders and if I try and fix it things get worse .
Like if I just give up and delete the offending pic ( ? ) it ( them ) justs does it to another pic , the one adjacent ::)

" Thou shalt not have it !!!! "

So enjoy the kitten ;)

Mo , out

This top bolster for the hull needs to be blended in .
The hull will have bump-outs on the sides to accommodate all of it

Thanks , Q

I think they would need a replacement for the original Maybach HL 230 engine to move this thing . :p

Continued with top deck reinforcement -

Not only to carry the massive turret ring but also preclude a shot-trap :

20160402_214223_zpswn5sxaqw.jpg20160403_094851_zpsvk4jx850.jpg20160403_094906_zps1qszy1qa.jpg

I'm thinking of changing the configuration of the exterior , hung counter-weights .
Maybe using fewer , slightly larger and thicker plates to replace the thin stock .

Suggestions , questions and derisions more than welcome ;D

Ciao

I've been contemplating whether to keep the gun's travel lock on the bow .
I'm seeing this thing as a rolling bunker - embroiled in building to building , downtown street fighting .
Most likely to have a very short service life . Knocked out before it breaks down .
Well , they hope . ;)

So , no travel lock .
More Steel ;D

.. and with a larger set of turret counter-weights :

The 70 mm plate added to the glacis extends past the beak to facilitate the installation of the chain apron ..
