Morning, folks...

So - having burnt myself out (literally - pesky German big cats!) on World of Tanks, I went to see 'Fury' last week, and now I've got the WWII bug again...

So... has anyone tried any WWII tabletop games or wargames with any degree of success...

I've hunted around and found Bolt Action by Warlord Games - anyone tried this system?

They have a contest/mini-game at the moment with loads of tanks and boxed games to win... might be worth a minute of your time, if you're into modelling or curious...

There's another one called Flames of War. I've heard a few good things about it, but I've never seen it played or played myself. It's something I'd be interested in learning more about.

Can anyone who knows more about either system comment?

I've played some Flames of War, though not nearly enough to be an expert.

I like the fact that it's 15 mm, so you don't need to paint too many tiny details. Also, though somewhat on the expensive side, Battlefront does have a rather large selection of models for the game.

The rules themselves are not the best I've tried, but they're good enough.

I used to play a LOT of flames of war ( a couple of years ago) the advantage of this game system over other 15mm games is it is detailed enough with out bogging down game play with rules. It is also divided into early mid and late war eras to balance out different factions to a extent. There is a lot of variation available with what units are available to build your force. The model range is is expansive and decently detailed. Beware that some of the "lesser" factions like the Fins might have a harder time being competitive in a tourney setting.

I played Flames of War and it is a nice little game with good rules and hundreds of tiny tanks to chose from so it is a good ww2 game but also have rules for vietnam conflict and i think for some modern stuff too_On the downside their models i realy expensive and not that good quality that would suggest that high price tag.For example 3 tiger2 cost about 50-60 euros in my country so it is a bit expensive for my paygrade but you can find good alternatives for 15mm tanks.Or as we did it we played it in 1/72 scale and there are some good bargain price 1/72 models to play with and looks better :) !You just have to up all the distances and stuff up to suit the bigger scale.

Or you can try the Operation World War 2 game it is for 1/72 and i think you can download their rules and other stuff for free.On the down side it is more for infantry squad based game so not too man tanks or if you want to use more tanks you have to play a bigger game but it will be more time. When we tried it we had a game that lasted for two days :) ! So the games are a bit slow paced if you want to play with a bigger army with tanks and stuff.

I only tried these to games and i can recommend any of them cos both of them are good.Just choose what you are interested in.So if you want to use more tanks play Falmes of War or if you want to use more troops with 1 or 2 tanks in support play OWW2.

never played any myself tried the game to see how I did got the tank in 4 shots not to bad I do say :)

I forgot to mention that there other alternative games for 15mm (and other scale WW2 games, I for one have played command decision, http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/6699/command-decision-iii and Disposable Heroes and Coffin For Seven Brothers http://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/19145/disposable-heroes-and-coffin-seven-brothers to name two others.
