B-17G Little Miss Mischief (BUILD) 1/48 Monogram

Hi you guys..... Thought you might like to see my Monogram B-17G build. A tough build. I love all of Monogram's big WWII kits..... they still stand up pretty well with a lot of attention needed!

Note: on the Google link below all the research I did and the build sequences to finish this beautiful model.... Little Miss Mischief" was a cannibalized aircraft.... various parts from other aircraft... I found this very interesting!

Yes.... mix the same silver with a Flat Black (not too much though). And if you want more deembarcation, you can mask and spray a light coat of Flat on certain panels. I usually use Testors Silver enamels, but now that Testor is out of business in the model paint realm, I am not sure what to buy now. I would like a durable BRIGHT silver..... Any ideas? Reesche

Beautiful build!

The B-17 is one of my favorite warbirds of all time. Yours look awesome. I want to build this kit one day, when I'm a little better lol.

Very nice B-17; especially the color combination and weathering. If it were my model, I might want to slightly fade the red to match the weathering on the rest of the plane. Other than that she's a beauty!

I like the Vallejo metal colors, they are acrylic but very nice.

What an excellent job! I especially like the drooped elevators! I've tried that on some of my models if I have seen photos from WW II depicting the same. Rudder deflection and tail or nose wheel turned also looks cool. Great variation on the Fortress

What a beauty - wonderful job with the historical reference! I have this exact model, unpainted as of yet. To this day, after 40 some years, it is still one of my all time favorites. Your project makes me want to revisit updating and painting it! Did you use any aftermarket kits, particularly any gun barrels?

Hey Marauder.... No after market kits or gun barrels just the old Monogram kit..... just took my time and made this old kit look great!

Bravo Zulu! Beautiful job of bringing a piece of interesting history back to life. Your hard work paid off in spades!
I am constantly amazed that 80 years ago a group of conscripted teenagers, with some supervision by some old Sergeants (in their early 20's) were able to take a heavily damaged plane like Little Miss Mischief, rebuild it from canabilized parts, and get the plane back into the fight. Simply amazing!

I don't know? I thought the fresh looking red paint was authentic looking. My reasoning is that the plane was rebuilt from the parts of other planes. The canabalized parts were generally not repainted, or stripped of paint, in order to put the plane back into service. Frankly, the bombers didn't tend to last too long, so spending any time on the paint job would be a waste of the ground crews' precious time.
The exception to wasting time on applying paint would be the application of any paint scheme that would have been used for identification purposes. In this plane's case, the red colour would have fit this purpose. Hence, my guess is that the red would have been freshly applied.
That's my reasoning, but it's only an educated guess.
I'd appreciate it if anyone who has some insights on the painting of Bomber Group markings could share their knowledge.

Very interesting thoughts Glenn.......Here are a couple of photo/Reference I had on my Build Link: https://photos.app.goo.gl/2QYrtoRVkQyXpLMJ2

I think I rest my case. The black and white photo of the belly landed Little Miss Mischief (as found in your link) clearly shows a well weathered tail. The above photo clearly shows a much brighter tail after Little Miss Mischief's rebuild (note the same tail number as the damaged original plane).
I'm still open to any info that anyone may have gleaned over the years.

I think I like all of the backstory as much as I do the finished build of it @Reesche . The details that you put into this ancient kit brought 'er up a standard that rivals the HK offering of this bird. Paint and weathering skills are top notch on this bird and you've most certainly captured "the look" of Little Miss Mischief.
Brilliant work bud.

Thank you very much Mustang! When I gather my research for all of these models, I acquire as much images and data that I can to get the "Feel" of what I'm building. This B-17G was an incredible bird..... from where it came to what it became is quite a story. Modeling this version took a lot of patience and an eye for detail to make it look cannibalized and realistic. Thank you again for the kudos! Reesche

the "Feel"
...well put.

Sure, there are technical details that will emerge that will enhance the accuracy of the model.
In the end though, for me as a model builder, the stories, the people, the triumphs and the failures serve to enhance the experience of the build, and hopefully impart some of that 'feel' to the final rendering of the model.

For me, the value comes from answering the question: why should I care?
