Help Support Scale Model Addict:

I have finished the painting and sprayed a semi-gloss coat in preparation for decals. I am now waiting for an hour or two for the varnish to harden, it was dry within 10 minutes being a lacquer based varnish but I have learned that with aggressive decal solutions it's best to be patient.

Sitting back and looking at it, this kit makes up a very nice Tornado IDS. I did have some fit issues around two areas, the complex part fit around the tail pipes which I never did get exactly right and the front fuselage fit to the 'body' of the aircraft. The latter was certainly down to me as I have previously said I am not feeling the love for this kit and found myself hurrying somewhat. I do remember on my first build how pleased I was with the fuselage fit, having none of the problems of this second build. If you build one, just take your time and I am sure you won't have my problems. As for the fit around the tail pipes, I had problems in this area on both kits and, with this, I think it's just over complex and the engineering didn't work for me. That said I got a result in the end.

So shortly I will start decalling with the excellent Cartograph decals provided. More to follow later.

This is how she looks.

I have separated the decals required for this build from the two very large decal sheets.

As you can see there are a lot of them…

I won't use them all and will focus on those that are most visible leaving off many of the small ones. Life is too short and I don't want to spend many days on a part on a build I least like. As said the Special Hobby Whirlwind is calling to me ever louder.

HI Barry she's lookin good now what does the letters IDS stand for ? an the trouble you had around the rear was it the revese thrust panels that were difficult to fit ? as im not yet ready to build my tornado GR4 but i was just lookin through my kit an they do look difficult am i right ? an how is your flat holding up after all that water above ?

Just had a closer look at the part of the large section labelled 'common' and realised quite quickly not all are common. In fact a closer look revealed that only these on that sheet are actually needed.

And, I might well paint at least one of these……

Hi Chris

Water problem sorted

I did not fit them in the reverse thrust configuration and I suspect that would be more problematical.

As for IDS, I believe it's Interdiction strike.

CHEERS Barry for your reply so yes the rear prob was the revese thrust panels then ? i'll be very carefull when i build my tornado an regards the wirlwind thats calling out to you that would be the w/w 2 fighter wont it ? as my dad said they had them up at RAF COLSITALL IN THE LATE 40'S an my dad spoke to the pilots an they said they were very difficult to fly

No Chris. I did not fit them. If you recall I did so on my GR4 but decided not to on this as I want a quick build.

HI Barry well i dont think i will fit them on my tornado either as they are to tiny an no doubt i'll lose one or two that ping out of the twezzers an that whilwind is that the plane with two enginges an a prop an a high tail ?

Correct on the Whirlwind Chris. I managed those small bits on the first build with losing any but that was just luck.
