Should I leave the wood around the cockpit shiny or tone it down?
I would leave it until the end and put a matt varnish over the lot to seal it, then just add the gloss prop afterwards.
Only a suggestion, you need to be happy with your build the way you envisaged it.

I will do that. I'll mask the cockpit then seal it all in once it's finished.

I ordered the jewelry thread which you showed on your post. It looks to be a great alternative moving forward.

I'm moving fairly slow on this build.
 
Got some more of the rigging done, think I will keep using thread on this build.

Well I'm calling this one. Quite a challenge but most enjoyable especially with the groups help along the way.

I will certainly be doing a few more of these in the future but I think its about time I got back to my tank's. Pantherman
